Looking at this S54... engine pricing?

I was searching Craigslist in my area for M3s, and I came across this wrecked E46 that's being parted out: http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/pts/2257256495.html

I emailed the guy to ask him how much they are selling the S54 for, and he says $2500. This is an SMG car, so getting the tranny with it likely wouldn't be feasible. I emailed him back to ask if this price included the MAF (looks like it's missing in the pic, but they may have it), the DME, engine wiring harness, etc, but haven't yet received a response. Honestly, I would consider selling my car, picking up an S54/tranny, and buying a cheaper Z to swap it in if I could find a good deal. Later on it would be pretty awesome to go ProEFI and do a custom turbo setup but that seems quite outlandish at this moment. Any ballpark numbers on what these should go for, and what the ZF 6 speed goes for? I'm pretty sure I won't ever do this, but it's fun to think about Click here to enlarge.

    Good idea for a thread.

Not really sure what a used S54 like that should go for but $2500 sounds like a steal, especially with all the electronics.

Thanks, yeah I was thinking that sounded like a pretty decent deal if the engine is not damaged from the accident and they include the accessories. If they don't, there could end up being a lot of nickel and diming on the small parts. Getting the 6-speed might also be a challenge. I'm curious if a E36 5-speed would be compatible if all else fails.

Just looked around a bit and an E46 6-speed with 50k on it sold for $1500 recently. There's an E36 5-speed with 68k on it for $400 on BFC, that wouldn't be too bad of a deal if it fit.

Don't think the E36 5 speed is compatible but the E39 M5 6 speed should be.

Good to know. I found another 55k mile S54 that sold for $4k, not sure if it came with electronics, but I doubt it. This motor would end up being stupid fast stock is the cool part about this swap.

Also interesting is that there is another '74 Z with an S52 swapped into it here in Oregon (got to see it in person as a work in progress), and another Z undergoing a S50B32 swap in Australia currently.

If I came across an S54 for $2,500 I'd buy it even if I didn't need it.

a good sub 100,000 mile e46 m3 engine with dme usually goes for around 4500 to 5000 this sounds to good to be true! But if everything checks out Sticky is right this is a steal!
