    Ticking sound "normal" w/cowl removed?

I've always heard a slight ticking sound, similar to that of someone in need of oil, but ever since I've been running w/the cowl removed, it's definitely louder. Even my husband's '01 540i has a faint ticking sound. Is this "normal"?

When I first bought my 335i, it was quite noisy through the break-in period. It sounded rough compared to my old 4 cylinder turbo'd Saab (which was the best 4 I've ever had, btw!)

Seems to have settled down a bit now though. I only get ticking on those stupidly cold days. If you need to feel a little better, just sit there with the window open and gently rev the motor .. sounds like pure bliss.
