Hear's a post. I got some TERRIBLE raceland downpipes.

So, I purchased some Raceland downpipes for $192 shipped, thinking I could finally do a huge install thread and say that the other downpipes are over priced, but I cannot. I got the downpipes yesterday evening and installed them. They were hideous. They're currently leaking at the turbo, since the flange cannot sit straight against the turbo. Nothing aligned correctly, and it hit the turbo oil line unless I bashed the downpipe with a hammer. Terrible. The welds were also hideous, but they tried to make them better by polishing and grinding them down. The TIG welds around the flanges weren't too bad, but the others were just nasty. It looked like something I did, the first time I picked up a mig welder. Anyway, I wasted a decent amount of money on pure $#@!, so now I'm looking into a replacement. I'm torn between the AR design catless downpipes and the CP-e downpipes with the cast flanges. It looks like the CP-e will give me a little more room to work around, since I have huge meathooks. Either way, what would you guys recommend? The welds on the AR look fantastic, are they all just as nice as their pictures? I just fear that I couldn't work around the larger pipes. Thanks!

AR all the way, sometimes you gotta pay a little extra dime if you're buying a precision part like exhaust pipes on a tightly packed turbo motor.

Haha, my empathies for your troubles. That's the conclusion I came too as well. Spend the money up front and save myself the frustration. The install isn't fun, so the less time I spent doing it the better.

Personally I went with the AR pipes from Mike@N54Tuning and he was amazing to deal with. Also AR is active here now. I've heard good things about the CP-E pipes as well, but their N54 customer service is lacking imho. The new ETS pipes look great to me as well and are competitively priced.

I appreciate the info. Those ETS pipes might be pretty nice, since they will give you a little wiggle room. I'll probably end up with the AR's but I might try getting these pieces of crap to seal again. This time I'll tighten the hell out of the vband connection and then force everything from there back into place. I doubt it'll work. Terry will find out in the morning if it does or not.

Anyway, here's where I put some of the pictures, so you can see the "quality". Remember these are Raceland, not something decent from one of the vendors here. I guess you could get lucky and get a set that work out pretty well, I just wasn't one of them.

Sorry to link to another site, but has anyone else seen these iCarbon downpipes? They look pretty nice. They seem similar in design to titek, and they appear to be nicely made.

Hmmm... Im a bit worried, those weldings actually look better than my UR Catless downpipes I have lying here waiting to install... I Tought the UR Dp's were decent quality?? they were retailing from 500 usd more or less... Terry you have them in your 135i , how are they??

I bought them from a friend of mine that bough them really long time ago and never used them... He bought them when the old DpFix V2 was still around... Was there any improved version or I should stop worrying?

    IŽll post pics tomorrow

OP - sorry to hear that.

^ seriously. Just once I want to find where "you get what you pay for." doesn't end up true. Oh well. I ordered some AR design downpipes this morning. I hope they get here the same time my JB4 upgrade does!

You get what you pay for, as you noticed.

AR or CP-E for downpipes, can stand behind both.

OP - I recommend you take a look at the Active Autowerke downpipes. I just bought these myself and the quality is really good. They sell for $699.00 at the AA website, but some vendors sell them for less due to a special intro price. I never thought downpipes were going to make such a huge difference on my car, the car now feels like it lost a few pounds, the throttle response got way better and its just overall faster, it feels like it gained power throughout the whole RPM band. This is possibly the best upgrade I've bought for my car so far, after the piggyback. Also, the new sound is intoxicating Click here to enlarge

I took a bunch of pics of them, if you want I can post them up. Let me know.
