WELLINGTON — Investigators say alcohol and speed played a role in the single-car crash that left a 29-year-old man dead, thrown from his car this morning in Wellington.

Daniel Portela of West Palm Beach had left the Player's Club Bar and Restaurant in his BMW M3 series and headed northbound on South Shore Boulevard, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's report.

Portela, who was wearing his seat belt, could not "negotiate" a curve and lost control, said Sgt. John Churchill of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. The car turned clockwise, made it on to the median and continued sideways until it stuck a tree, which split the car in half, the report stated.

The front half of the car continued to slide on the median until it struck a second tree, which threw Portela from his car, according to the report. That part of the car then caught fire.

    Portela died at the scene.

Damn, he had to have quite a bit of momentum to do that, and we all know the mass, wonder what the velocity was.....

Another life lost, may he rest in Peace.

It is bad enough to drink and drive, but to also drive recklessly. He had to have been driving at some serious speeds, all while intoxicated.

Luckily no innocent people were hurt.

I feel sorry for his family. RIP

Are you serious with this? A stock M3 or even 328 is more than enough to get you into trouble.

A 400+ hp RWD car isn't something you need to treat with respect? The thread shows that if you don't, things can get bad in a hurry.

Yes this is true. But seriously you need to be doing some stupid $#@! to lose control and split a car in half.

bro what are you talking about?? cars are crash tested at 30mph,anything after that we are experimenting!!! Even a kia Rio or a dodge caravan can do 80,90, or a 100mph so why do you keep saying the m3 isnt that fast?? it doesnt say he hit the tree at 230! it doesnt matter how fast he got to 90 or what ever speed he was doing, it only matters that he was doing 90 at that moment
