    Car and Driver tests the new F25 X3 Xdrive35i - 14.2@97

The new X3 poses a very interesting entry into the SUV landscape. Packing a 3.0 liter turbo 6 cylinder with 300 hp, it really is quite fast for an SUV. Being over 1000 pounds lighter than X5 or X6 certainly does not hurt. In stock form the SUV is running times comparable to the US E36 M3. It is not marketed as such, but due to the low curb weight and turbo powerplant the X3 makes for an interesting entry into the performance SUV realm. Think about what it could do with a V8. Specs below:

    VEHICLE TYPE: front-engine, 4-wheel-drive, 5-passenger, 5-door wagon
PRICE AS TESTED: $55,100 (base price: $41,925)
ENGINE TYPE: turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 24-valve inline-6, aluminum block and head, direct fuel injection
Displacement: 182 cu in, 2979 cc
Power (SAE net): 300 bhp @ 5800 rpm
    Torque (SAE net): 300 lb-ft @ 1300 rpm
TRANSMISSION: 8-speed automatic with manumatic shifting
    DIMENSIONS:
Wheelbase: 110.6 in Length: 183.0 in
Width: 74.1 in Height: 65.4 in
    Curb weight: 4211 lb

    C/D TEST RESULTS:

Zero to 60 mph: 5.5 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 15.2 sec
Zero to 120 mph: 23.2 sec
Street start, 5–60 mph: 6.3 sec
    Standing ¼-mile: 14.2 sec @ 97 mph
    Braking, 70–0 mph: 165 ft

    FUEL ECONOMY:
    EPA city/highway driving: 19/26 mpg
    C/D observed: 18 mpg

It really isn't that small, about the same size as the first generation X5.

It doesn't need a V8 Sticky, just bolt-ons, a tune and Rob Beck's turbos. It would be quite the SUV, especially with some good off-road tires/wheels.

The X3 handles surprisingly well. I had the previous gen, handled way better than my Cayenne.

Interesting...BMW said special-order X3's would have a delivery time of about a week. I remember reading this when BMW released the new X3. They are trying to get Americans to build-to-order, rather than getting one of the lot.

Why are they trying to get them to build to order?

Here is a quote from an article,
BMW wants its U.S. dealers on board to help promote options on built-to-order models. Built-to-order vehicles, which can help manufacturers keep inventories lower and aren’t discounted as much, are rare in the United States.

That is what I was thinking, US customers are accustomed to having what they want on the lot right away. In Europe, most new cars are ordered.

It is basically for them to help dealers keep inventories lower and profits up, F that, I want my car right away and I like discounts.
