How much should It cost to install my new motor?

Counting everything except tuning...new plugs, fluids, putting the the headers, intake, SC etc back in?

My buddy owns a BMW shop and he says it will be around $4K.

That is a pretty good deal, I think. However, I do a lot of personal training for him (weights, and I have been teaching him MMA).

What would it cost if I just had a reputable indie shop do it?

Install the motor plus all the hardware? I think he can do much better than $4k, especially if you are buds.

I wouldn't give him more than 2. It takes about 10 hours to install an SC (less if you have it down), so $1g right there. Will it take him 10 hours to install the motor? I seriously doubt it.

The exhaust and fluids do complicate things but it isn't that bad.

No....actually, I brought up the number....I was hoping the cost was going to be much less, and he started to say how much it was going to take, and I said "is it going to be 4k"? And he agreed. Yes, I think that is high and will have a talk with him.

I will tell him tomorrow that I got some quotes and the cost should be closer to 2K.

It's high, when you said $4k sounds like he ran with it...

I would slap a human who told me that price. 1600-2000 tops. Edit: if it was a skilled wizard it would be much less. Other price is a shop price.

OK, we just talked....as noted, the 4K # was my number. He is going to do the whole job for 2.6K.

Remember, my car is all custom, he has to deal w/ the fuel system etc. He is also going to do a job for Jerry who will be tuning and is going to try and include the tuning in the 2.6k package.

I justed had my engine replaced in July; I paid $2700. Since the engine was out I also decided to replace the clutch and flex disc since I had close to 80k miles.
I think your quote of $2600 is a fair price.

With the proper tools and equipment, about 30 man hours to do a complete swap plus bolt ons.. due the math to a price you feel is right. That's about how long it would take me working by myself.

Thats not a bad price. I would have charged you about that. 30Hrs x $85/hr =$2550....10 for the sc, another 8-10 for install (im very meticulous and i like to go all over my work twice and double check everything without rushing) and you figure another day for tuning.

    Thanks for the intake, Chad!

We are still trying to decide what to do, put the SC back in or go NA. I have to buy injectors ($800) and about $1K in other stuff if we are going to go NA.

Staying SC is cheaper. We need to buy a bunch of stuff to go back to NA. The intake Chad gave me will save me about $1400.

The guy who worked at the shop that built my car was supposed to help us make a final decision today, but he is not returning phone calls.

Is it my imagination, or is the car repair business full of people with $#@! ethics?

I'm with you. It seems like the entire car work industry is shady. I feel like I'm playing roulette every time I can't do the work on my car by myself

It is not your imagination, finding a quality shop that does things to a tip top professional level is VERY difficult.

Unfortunately, you aren't the only one who often feels that way. There are quality shops out there though and when you find them it is best to stick with them.
