If building a classic BMW, would you turbo it or keep it NA?

I've just been day dreaming a bit about old BMW's after seeing those pics posted from the Florida meet. I started to wonder, if building up an old BMW, do you keep it with the original intent going NA possibly swapping in a more modern BMW powerplant or do you turbo it?

It seems like putting a turbo on an old car, like an E9, 2002, E12, E21, etc., might be way too much for the chassis and make it drive nothing like what it should. Then again, it might make it a total sleeper that is a hell of a lot of fun.
Hard to not like this though:

But then again an all motor classic BMW is sweet as well offering an experience of its own.

    Turbo.

Think about it, all those old motors are iron. Swap internals, design a proper turbo system, find a tune, rape expensive cars.

I think the question should be asked, keep it OEM stock restored or go crazy and go big power.

Honestly I love both. I would want a bone stock E30 restored to perfection and I would also want an M52 70mm turbo making 800 whp with mini tub and a 6 speed.

It's hard to decide such things.

Well I suppose some people could do that. This is more a philosophical question though.

Exactly, but with an M52 with a huge turbo it no longer really is an E30 M3 at that point.

Personally go with a healthy stroker NA E30 I6. Cheap and will run longer than you will live.

For me it is more a question of changing the character. Is the fun factor still the same? A low boost, quick spooling setup doesn't necessarily have to be overpowering.

Buy some large displacement I6 (3.2-4.0L) and get a twinscroll manifold with a gt3071r. It will spool VERY quick and be 500hp capable.

I am a huge fan of low revving, low boost, larger displacement stroker motors for street duty. Reliable and plenty fast in light chassis.

I was never interested in making 1000 whp, too dangerous for street use and there really is no point for it because you will never use that much power daily driving.

A 500 whp E30 with a 3.2L stroker and 15-18 psi boost is all I would want. Restore the interior, non of this crap rigged business. Keep it clean, fresh paint, lower it and give it some suspension bits; clean engine bay and pump gas with meth injection.
Simple and fast has always been my philosophy.

That is still stupid fast for the street and traction would likely be the biggest problem.

    OMG This

A 9 inch ford rear end is bulletproof, mini tub it, why the $#@! not? Its an E30 chassis, its practically made of paper. Go 325 MT ETs on a ford 9inch and run high 9s with a dead reliable setup.

I have been told by an BMW dealer(the owner) that the car he would build for street or track would be a properly set up turbo/twin turbo e36. With enough chasis engineering to dial in the corner, small and light enough to toss around, and enough of a starting power point to be strong at any point in the rev range even going up hill!
