The 1-Series isn't an E30. It never will be an E30.

The 1 series will always be the odd man out. Loved by few but not typically understood by most.

The e46 m3 is also around 3400 lbs, more reason to put the 1series on a diet.

However, the 135 cab is a blast to drive, def wouldnt mind having one as a pocket rocket. But the 128 was the last true NA enthusiast car from BMW, which is prob what Jalopnik was getting at.

My e46 fully loaded is 3420. Do simple math and calculate each cars power to weight. Makes the weight magically disappear.

I agree the article is geared towards the 128i. The 1 series will just be the 1 series. The car only a few will appreciate and love.

E92 M3 weighs 35XX... once again. And the GTS is lighter than the 1M.

There's one important sentence in the article and that is the one where it says that the 1m doesn't have motorsport heritage. And that is so true (and important) for this type of car.
It's just like with supercars: supercars without motorsport achievements are imho less desirable because motorsports succes is of course the embodiment of real performance. So maybe the 130i hatchback is the real deal (that has been raced a lot in europe). Less expensive too Click here to enlarge
Still an 1m is way cooler than its audi rival the rs3....
But the 1m should be a little bit lighter (25-50kg or so); It weighs about the same as the e46 m3 (on paper), and that has a pretty heavy cast iron engine.
A 130i (hatchback) weighs 110kg lighter on paper (1360kg), and that is a lot. And even that is a heavy car; a z4 3.0si with the same engine is 75kg lighter than the 130i: 1285kg.

On the contrary, I think there is respect for the 1series, we just wish BMW had further refined the platform as a proper homage to the e30 or 2002 even.

I tend to agree. Some people hate it for what it isn't, but I enjoy it immensely for what it is. Despite all its alleged flaws and shortcomings, it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. IMHO, not much else matters.

I read somewhere that BMW alway's includes a 165# driver in its published vehicle weights. True?

It does seem that measurements by owners always come in under the BMW weights. Therefore, the 135i would be somewhere in the 3,2xx lb range.

I don't know if it is always but they do it in Europe when they list the weights.
