    Maintenance Costs

With the ever so fast decreasing prices of the M6, I can only begin to see the light. However, I'm not sure if the light is the end of the tunnel or if it's a train headed my way. What kind of maintenance costs am I looking at for the M6? I know a lot of you have had some very common and uncommon issues on the M5/6 S85 platforms, so if you don't mind sharing the costs whether they be DIY or dealership costs I would appreciate it.

The E6x M5/M6 are GREAT vehicles.. However, maintenance and repairs can be VERY costly. It's good that you seek advice before diving in.

First your better off getting a 08+ LCI model. They all have problems but I feel that the LCI gives you a better opportunity to save some coin.

I'd go for the M6 SMG coupe with the full leather and carbon fiber trim.. The vert would be nice but who knows what the repair cost is for the top on that thing.

My issues were very extensive for a late build 2006 M5. (Last week the 06's were built and 6 months before 08' production began)

Bought mine with 38k miles on it and purchased a aftermarket warranty the day I bought it. (Thank God) They have since dropped my coverage at $30k worth of payouts Click here to enlarge

    CCC(Idrive computer) $1,570.00 Dealer
    SMG Pump- $4,700.00 Dealer
    Alternator- $968.00 Indy
Idel Actuator bank 2- $1,250.00 Dealer
Throttle Actuator bank 2- $1,875.00 Dealer
Steering Angle Sensor (SZL)- $990.00 Indy
Idel Actuator bank 1- $970.00 Indy
Passenger Seat Mat Sensor- $2,400.00 Dealer
Vanos Pump Failed, spun a rod bearing- Used Motor $9,850.00 + $7,785.00 Labor at the dealer for swap
Head was cracked on the motor so $4,000 Labor at the dealer to swap the head
2 Vanos Solenoids on bank 2 $300.00 DIY
DME replacement- $3,000.00 - Dealer under emissions warranty (don't think I needed this replaced but hey it was free)
Flywheel- $3,300 dealer quoted but I'm doing it myself and still have yet to pull the trans.. I'm pretty pissed about this one as I told the dealer to inspect my flywheel and clutch 800 miles ago when they had my motor out. I wanted to replace them then if there were issues.. Now i need a new flywheel.. WTFFFFF?

So in 2 years and 30k miles of driving it's at $43k worth of repairs....

    Add that to:
    $150-$200 Oil changes every 5-7k miles (10 Liters TWS-10w60)
    10-11mpg fuel consumption
    Tires
    Brakes
    Insurance

All that aside I still love my M and have enjoyed every single mile in it. It's been a great road with the beast. I just feel that I got an unlucky car and pretty much had ALL the common issues happen to me lol.. Once I get it all squared away it's time to trade it in.. For what IDK just yet..

I'll for sure miss this the most..

They can just drop your coverage like that? What's the point of the warranty then?

The contract stipulates that the payouts can not surpass the value of the vehicle at any given time. For example if they have already paid out $10k, then you need another repair for $15k, but at the time your car is only worth $22k, they will payout $12k and drop you. Then you are responsible for the $3k remaining on the repair and you have no more warranty.. It was good while it lasted.. Hell I paid $2,850.00 for mine lol. This was of course before they caught on to the M5/M6 repair bills as they have since raised the price for a coverage plan drastically. I dought my warranty provider will even cover them again. I know others have stopped writing new plans for them as well..

Gotcha, then that makes complete sense. Extended warranties just seem like a way for them to collect money but at least you got your money's worth with yours.

I'm really not sure. Everything that happened to my car isn't uncommon for any M5 or M6.. I guess luck caused it to be excessive in my case?

Let's assume you had a it a bit worse that still seems to point to the S85 being a maintenance nightmare.

^ Yea that is a very bad luck story and sucks to happen to such a cool guy. Click here to enlarge

Ive had my 2009.5 M5 for a few months now and its been bulletproof thus far at whatever ive thrown at it.
Like mentioned try to jump on a 09/10.. Most of the known issues have been addressed or revised. Some issues still do crop up but no car is perfect. 2006/2007 seem to have the most issues, recalls and revised parts. So I would 100% stay clear of those 2 years.

As for maintenance. every 45K, tranny oil and rear diff oil changes ( I just did a rear diff oil change and it cost me a lil over $150 bucks.

Need about 9 quarts of oil and filter from the dealer for a oil change, cost me if I remember around 150+ aswell.

Spark plugs every 37K miles.. 10 plugs, at anywhere from 10-22 bucks a piece from what I saw.

Everything else is just basic maintenance like every other car, air filters, cabin filters, etc.

Awesome. Really appreciate the help. I'm going to hold off until the newer models continue dropping a little more to see where they bottom out.

Thats a lot of coin for the car. Seems mostly like a lot of top end work. All this is common on the s85? Expensive but its to be expected for a car at this caliber.

not even with an aftermarket warranty? @TZ04XJR any suggestions as to a warranty company? I know very few still offer them on the V10 BMWs.

08+ has new headlights/tail lights and a whole new interior design aswell. If you can get a warranty company to cover things like vanos, hydraulic system for the SMG, throttle and idle actuators etc. then of course go for it, but if you get a round of bad luck like TZ04XJR, then you will be at the shop a lot even tho its covered its still a hassle. But you will be much better off getting a 2009/10. Less headaches.

Best I can recall Fidelity Platinum is the current preferred plan for S85 M5 and M6 owners. Expect to pay $4k+ for a decent term plan.

Well guys.. I test drove a 335i today and it seems I'll likely be in one of those by the end of this month or early next. The E60 M5 is my dream car, and while owning one at my age and with my resources is sort of feasible, the 335 route seems infinitely more attractive from a practical perspective. Plus I feel the M5 might be a little too high up the food chain for me but I'll still cry whenever I run into one.

Gonna look at a few more in the area and bolt up JB4 and maybe DPs, but who knows, I might pull a 5soko and join the S85 club after!
