S85 Vanos Adjustment Unit Replacement DIY Question

Hopefully one of you guys have been through this repair... Not necessarily with just the S85 either.

My question is do you have to complete the Vanos ventilation/bleed procedure after replacing the Vanos Adjustment Unit in one of the heads? If you do not complete the procedure prior to starting your motor, will it still throw Vanos codes for the bank from the excess air in the lines and unit?

The reason I ask is I had inlet and outlet faults on only one bank as well as misfires on all cylinders for that bank. I replaced the unit and solenoids and cleared all my codes. I fired it up and it took some time to fault again but only after I revved it up past 1500 RPM's. Again I have not yet had the ventilating/bleeding procedure completed. I then got both inlet and outlet faults again but with no misfires. I'm feeling confident that I replaced the correct part as my dealer actually diagnosed it. Also upon removing the bad unit, the intake disk was completely stuck. I'm just stuck waiting around for my friend with an Autologic to get back in town so we can run the vent procedure... I'm hoping that this will work for me Click here to enlarge

Any help or advice will help put my mind at ease... Thanks guys Click here to enlarge

Here is the unit I'm describing.. Though If you've done this, you obviously know the part I'm discussing.

I have no idea on this.

You may want to talk to @Mike@VAC or @evolve about this.

    Thanks for the reply..

I've made some progress and have determined that both vanos solenoids on that bank need to be replaced. I ordered some today and will swap them out asap. I'll update with the my results, hopefully it's positive as I'm beyond anxious to drive my car again!

You have to do the bleeding procedure after replacement.

    *UPDATE*

Yesterday I replaced both intake and exhaust solenoids with brand new units. My car is FINALLY running 100%! It idled rough for a few seconds but then smoothed out and never went into limp mode. I have since put about 60 miles on it and did not find any fault codes using my Evolve Tune software. Click here to enlarge

The entire process took me less than 1 hour to complete. Then again, I've done it several times these past few weeks. Click here to enlarge

Took it out to a little M meet this morning..

    Hello TZ04XJR,

I have a few questions if you don't mind helping me. I got a P0015 code which is camshaft positioning sensor bank 1 B. I replaced it with a brand new OEM Bmw sensor but still no luck. I am thinking about doing what you did.

Does the S85 have 4 vanos solenoids?
Does the S85 have vanos seals that need to be replaced?
How did you manage to replace all four vanos solenoids in a hour?
Did you have to clear the engine malfunction limp mode after you finished with the work?
How do you bleed after replacement?

I tried sending you a PM but I can not do so yet. If you don't mind helping I would greatly appreciate it. You can email me at pdb1128 at yahoo

    Thank you

    Paulo

    Hey Paulo,

I got your PMs but I'll reply here. Yes you have 4 vanos solenoids, one for each of your 4 cams.
The new units come with with the o-ring you need.
Its pretty strait forward to get to the units after removing your fan and getting your coolant hoses out of the way.
I used my Evolve software to clear all the codes before start up after swapping them out.
I have a friend with a Autologic that I used to do the bleed procedure. The car ran fine even before doing the bleed but I did it anyway.
It may or may not solve your problem but its worth swapping them out regardless. It seems as of late a bunch of s85's have been failing their vanos tests.

Good luck, let us know how it works out.

Thank you for all the info. I ordered BMW Scanner 1.4.0 / Car Diagnostic Interface Tool Code Reader hopefully I have enough functions to be able to run a vanos test and the bleed function.
    I will keep updates

After a month of surgery looks like the beast will be back on the road this Friday. Let me tell you guys, if some of you don't already know. Our rod bearings are $#@!! My whole problem was that the rod bearings were so worn out and crooked that it caused the engine malfunction light. I was very lucky that the light came on and I stopped driving it. My mechanic pulled the bearings out and showed me how bad they looked. There was no damage to the crank.
My car has 91k miles and I change my oil every 5k miles with recommended 10-60. I searched the web and it seems to be kind of a common problem.

No, but I can take some when I pick the car up. I visited the car when the mechanic was just starting and he showed me how scratched and bare to the copper they were. Also if any of you run into this in the future do not let anyone tell you that the engine needs to come out and that it will cost you 50+ hours of labor. The whole job can be done in roughly 15 hours by lifting and working from the bottom. Parts ran about $550

Please take pics of your bearings and let's move the bearing discussion to another thread when you do. I think it's an important issue for people especially now that S85's are getting up in mileage.

I wanna get one tore apart and make these rods custom with a better set- like i do with the S54 and the N54 engines.

but that would involve grinding the crank/changing the rods- so that would mean a complete tear down to do so

I've got my core s85 just sitting in the garage. I had a spun rod bearing and ended up replacing the entire engine. PM me if want to discuss grabbing it from me.. I'm also in Texas BTW.
