    N20 related question

So, a friend of mine has a Z4 20i. It has the N20 engine. The car feels kind of slow and needs more boost. I checked and found that Kelleners retunes the it and bump the hp from 180 up to 220hp, but they also have a tune for 28i model which increases the hp to 294. Disappointing numbers, i know. But the goal of pointing this is since they are the same engines, why one is limited to 220 and the other is limited 294? I searched a bit more and found out the similar results from others tuners. The 28i makes way more power than the 20i.

Do the N20 in 20i and 28i actually differ from each other? First i thought the snails were different but they have the same part number listed on realoem.

Does anyone know anything about this?

    Thanks.

    The Z4 20i isn't the N20. The 28i is.

It can't just be a tune or else it would be simply an ECU program issue. They can't be the same thing or else they would get the same output.

I notice that the compression ratio are difference 520I (11) 528I (10). Other than this I can't find the difference. Somebody need to take apart both the engine. Click here to enlarge

Source? I checked the N20 press release and the CR is mentioned 10:1. The Z4 20i catalog says 10:1 too.
It's a shame that in Europe nobody shares info.

At first I thought you had a nitrous related question.

It is a 2.0 liter I4 but there have to be differences or else software would put them in the same spot wouldn't it?

^ Interesting, internals are different it would seem. So then it would be reasonable to think so is the turbo.

That's what i'm saying. RealOEM says the turbos are the same. I'm confused at this point and BMW France doesn't help either. No wonder why i feel i'm right at home, it's a messed up country too.

Well let's see if we can figure this out. If the turbos are the same then the software should do the exact same gains.

Any Tuner can confirm whether we can use 28i tuning box on the 20i engine?

Doesn't seem you can or else there would not be separate tunes with separate results.
