A weak Ford Focus RS and BMW F82 M2 comparison by Auto Express

Everyone is hungry for comparison videos that include these two hot and frequently discussed entry level performance cars for their respective brands. Those cars being the Ford Focus RS and the BMW M2. The Ford Focus RS is getting rave reviews and recently beat out all of its hatchback competition in a mega test by AutoTrader UK.

The M2 is hardly a hot hatchback and not really a direct competitor (why they call it a rival is anyone's guess) but these two cars offer great driving experiences despite their very different approaches. The Focus of course has an Ecoboost turbo four-cylinder with with all wheel drive and the M2 a turbo N55B30T0 3.0 liter inline-6 with rear wheel drive.

Why does AutoExpress say the M2 has the M4's S55 inline-6 to start off the video? Good question. It sounds like someone did not do their research when they screw up such a big point.

They take the cars onto what they call a 'compact' circuit which is a generous term for it. They might as well have auto crossed these cars. Laps well under a minute long? Is this is a go kart track or an actual roadcourse?

    Lap Times:

    Focus RS - 46.8 seconds
    BMW M2 - 46.7 seconds

The lighter BMW offers slightly more power (15 horses) but less peak torque. The M2 makes 343 lb-ft to the Focus RS 350 lb-ft but these are crank ratings and you can expect the M2 to have more torque on the dyno as well as earlier in the rev range thanks to its displacement and lower drivetrain losses.

Let's just say power, torque, weight, and balance are in the BMW's favor. As well as the shift speed since the M2 is the DCT version and the Focus RS is manual only. Despite these factors the M2 finishes only a tenth ahead.

On a real course the DCT M2 likely will open a larger gap. This tight circuit favors the RS grip out of corners and the driver struggles clearly having the tail come out on him which he then compensates for which loses time.

This is hardly scientific and hardly a quality comparison but as everyone seems to be starved for content Auto Express can get away with proclaiming this watered down drivel as a serious 'Which is king on the track?' comparison.

BoostAddict looks forward to a higher quality comparison with higher quality driving on a higher quality circuit.
