VS Motorsports N54 walnut blasting results to remove carbon buildup (also available for N55)

Ran into this and with the recent posts about walnut blasting thought I would share. I mean just look at the gunk buildup before and how clean it looks afterwards. Not sure how much they charge for this but so far we have seen $550 thrown around as a fair price for this.

    In their words:

    Why is this necessary?
Because all BMWs with direct injection will have this problem.
    issues with driveability
    loss of power
    inconsistent idle
    emission concerns

What tools will VS Motorsports Use?

Because this is a crucial job and one that we believe needs to be done right and done right the first time we went ahead and purchased the factory BMW tool that they use to perform this. Not only will this make it easier for our techs to complete this job, but allows us to have your car done in a timely fashion.

Here is the BMW tool that we purchased

Does the head needs to be pulled for this walnut blasting or can it be done with just the intake manifold removed?
There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works

In those photos it doesn't look like they pulled the head but I could be mistaken.

The head doesn't have to be removed, only the intake manifold. I got this done on my car at around 80.000km and the improvement on throttle response was immediately noticable.

You can contact forum member @Alpina_B3_Lux if you want to get your valves cleaned. He has the equipment shown above and will offer a fair deal pricewise. Only downside would be that you'd have to travel to Luxembourg.

But if a BMW dealer closeby can do this I'd take that offer Click here to enlarge
My car only has 44K km on it, so I hope it won't be necessary for a long time. Especially now that I have the BMS OCC installed.

At 44k you probably already have some build up.

I would consider it every 50k kms. BMW dealers normally offer this job, but here in Luxembourg they quote around 1.000 EUR Click here to enlarge

Which of course is way too much for a job that can be done in 2 to 3 hours!

They are a supporting vendor on E90post and they advertised it. VS Motorsports is one of the best BMW race shops in the Midwest.

you would be surprised, but if you spend a lot of time at full throttle, or a lot of acceleration in your car, your valves will not be very dirty. They accumulate a lot when you do a lot of idling, cruising on the highway or just part throttle use around town. That is when the PCV system is open and working, and the motor is sucking all this grime in.

    I did a valve cleaning on a 135 track car....33k miles...barely needed it.

I did the first N55 in the tri-state area, and to be honest, it wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be...BMW redesigned the PCV setup, and it doesnt get clogged up as bad or as fast as the N54s do. Trying to get it out with the DME attached to the intake manifold was fun though.

I also noted that the quality of parts between the N54 and N55 is highly apparent. The N54 has a much more robust build to it, while the N55, cheapness is apparent everywhere. Thinner manifold, self-tapping screws to hold the throttlebody on vs quality bolts and nuts, less bracketry. The head does look like it will flow quite nicely compared to a stock N54, the ports are reshaped slightly and look larger.
