    BMS N55 tuning progress

    Just an update from Terry:

Next step will be to turn the prototype harness I've made over to Jon who will coordinate manufacturing them, and after we have a few we will start local beta testing. w00t! I'll post details on that when ready. E.G. Don't email me just yet.

Here are some teaser shots of the stage 1 PnP system. The production harness will have black corrugated tubing covering the harness like the OEM harness.

Me either but I think it will be some time until the N55 surpasses it, which it will.

Just got off the phone with the BMW dealer here in Germany. The N55 performance kit is availalbe right now so it should not be much longer of the US. You will need to have your chasis number available to order. The cost is 1,500 Euro and installation is about 700 Euro including VAT. So it will cost you about 1,850 Euros, or approximately $2,600.

If I may ask this question.

Why so much wiring and stuff and not just a DME flash? Did you find it easier or more cost effective to make a piggy back system?

The market for BMS is piggybacks and that is their hardware they decided to apply. They do not do flashes.

I think this has been shelved for a little bit, even the logging software doesnt read right. Hopefully Terry will get some time to make some more progress on it.

What is the issue with the N55 software?

It is still listed on the BMW site: http://www.burgertuning.com/N55_Jb_B...nce_Tuner.html

It's going to deter a lot of shadetree tuners and scare a lot of "mail in" flashers. To do it correctly (leak free) the whole intake manifold needs to be removed. The good part however will come tomorrow. We are dynoing ours first thing.

I can wait until tomorrow, no worries.

Whole intake manifold needs to be removed for anyone removing the ECU? Kind of a hassle.

The ecu is built to sit inside the underneath of the intake manifold on runner 5 and 6 next to the firewall. Like there is a fist sized hole in the manifold for it to sit.

Never seen anything like it. Like without it seated in perfectly you will get a huge vacuum leak next.to the maf sensor and permanent limp mode. To do reading and writing to it on the bench over and over is a process for development. But we successfully wrote the tune in earlier.

Well, if you just replace the intake manifold properly there should be no leaks right?

I know that much, but is because they don't have a means of tuning the DME or they just find this more cost effective?

Primarily a cost factor but likely a combination.

BMS N55 JB3 Stage 1 Piggyback Installed!!! Thank you Terry - your workmanship on the cable is Pro! Your Flash - More than expected from SOTP

The install is a piece of cake, there are only 2 hard parts, 1. Getting the cowl realigned with only one person and 2. Is getting the DB25 and ECU Flash about 4" long 2" wide into the wire connection routing box, or is it the DME Box. Anyway, I did not want to cut into the rubber seals, and could not route the DB25 connector thru the rubber, so instead, I Wrapped the ECU Flash in a plastic bag, wire tied it and taped it closed from the elements. Then I sandwiched it on the top of the DME (SP?) box, and enclosed it with the Black exterior cover. I found this area stayed cool before I put it there.

Now - How did it fair when I fired it up - Well the is a very slight Turbo lag, after that it took off. After I warmed up the engine for 15 min. I started to put my foot into it. I found myself breaking loose the rear tires (335i) when i was rolling, and again shifting to second, she broke the back end to the right at least 9".

My first impression is WOW. I did not expect the results. The low end torque is big and she Pulls from 1500 to just over 4 and is much quicker after you pass the T-Lag. I don't have a Dyno close to me, but I could do a 0-60 as soon as I find my Stop Watch. Reminder, the suspension has been completed with Bilstein PSS9/10 and H&R Sway bars but this is the first power related mod I have made. The aFe scoops are installed, but the New N55v aFe intake has yet to arrive. The exhaust is still stock, I wanted the AMS, but they told me that it will not fit the 2011 N55 335i E90

Has anyone else installed this Modification?
