    2012 328i N20 Dyno Testing!

    Hey guys,

Took a few hours today to do some N20 dyno testing and tuning. For those that have been living under a rock for the past few months the N20 is a 2.0L 4 cylinder turbo and motors replaces the N52 motor used in the 328i, among other cars.

We only have around 200 miles on the car but so far first impressions are very positive. Compared to the previous 328i N52 motor the N20 is much more responsive and has excellent low end torque characteristics. In addition it has much more power to redline. It also delivers better fuel economy. In short, it really blows the N52 away in all categories. Below is an N52 vs. N20 dyno comparison.

With regard to tuning BMW definitely left some room for improvement with the N20. Unfortunately, they changed around the DME so none of the CAN stuff we've developed for the N54 and N55 motors is compatible. It's back to square one there.

But doing the tuning on a JB3 platform using an OBDII logger for advance and throttle, and the dyno for AFR and output, we were able to make some nice tuning improvements. I still think there is another easy 10hp in there with more work. But very pleased at the results so far. On the road the tuning feels much more responsive and almost as fast as an OEM 335i now.

We'll continue working on the software end and expect to have an N20 Stage1 BETA system ready in the near future.

Good work Terry! Easy .3 second acceleration difference on the 0-60mph right off the bat. Click here to enlarge

Runs fairly rich for an oem DI turbo motor. Do your remember what the ignition and boost curves were like, or have a graph? This is the 8-speed auto?

Is it just me or is that picture not the best proof of BMW doing things right! The engine sits almost behind the front wheels, it is far from an VW/Audi engine bay!

Congrats Terry, BTW this was done w/o a modified intake so I gather another 5-7 hp on the wheels, BMW seems like you outproven yourself with this engine!!!

x2 I was about to say the same. With an intake and catless downpipe. I think you can get another 10-15 whp midrange along with some torque. That engine is doing great with just a tune.

Nicely done Terry; this will be a very nice platform as far as performance/economy are concerned. It will be interesting to sit back and watch how far this engine can be pushed as other performance mods are created for it.

I think the N20 is going to have more room to work with than the N54.

I just drove one and it didn't impress me with the power vs my wife's 328 09. The power curve is very deceiving apparently. Now if only they would put this motor in the new mini Cooper GP. 260whp in a mini and I'd trade in my boss....
