Reserved one in the store (via Apple.com) at around 4AM, when I couldn't get an order to go through to the cart (Add to Cart = Oops!), else I'd have just stayed at home on Thursday, waiting for the package to arrive.
I looked over the photos it takes and still just ok. Why can't phones do what stand alone digital cameras can?
I don't know if I want to give Apple business after that whole let's destroy the life of the guy who found our phone thing.
Most digital cameras these days have dedicated processors, sensors, mirrors, etc. It'd be too much to stuff in there. Technology is improving every day though, I think a 5mp camera with 720 video is pretty impressive for a phone. Sure it's not going to be the quality from even a 5d/7d since those have large advances. I'm pretty stoked for this phone though, more so than any of the three previous iPhones (ok, maybe not the first).

I figured you did, got mine coming on the 24th too. I'll be sitting by the front door waiting for the package to arrive, due to an unreliable doorbell. I can't afford to miss the drop either.
I guess I just don't see what the big deal about this phone is? Better camera, ok, some more memory, ok, and a higher res screen. What makes this such a big deal?
I guess it all depends on the person and their interests. Technology is one of mine, so I get excited over these things. On the other hand, if Kitchenmaid comes out with a new knife set that is made from diamond, I'm not going to upgrade my stainless steel set since it works for me fine. 512mb memory boost is awesome, camera is pretty nice I probably won't use 720p or video that often though, higher res screen is amazing (iPhone was due for this), and a new design is always excited. I purchase a new iPhone each year, regardless of what the upgrades are though, so I might not be a good example. Some people just like to get the new iPhone just because it's 'new' and hyped. Heck, I was waiting in line last year when the 3GS was released and 3 hours in I started talking to an older guy next to me and he had no idea what he was even in line for. He said his son told him about this new Apple product and he was in the area so he might as well wait in line and purchase whatever it was.
^ I'm the same way. Im a big gadget head. Like you said, the memory upgrade, extended battery life, the high resolution screen, the new camera and FLASH, 720p video, A4 processor, and can't forget the front facing camera for video conferencing. I get the new phone every year like phiber....
I've had all 3 iPhones, so I'm part of the bandwagon, too. I'm excited about iOS4's updates to Exchange, since I use this as a work phone, as well.
The camera upgrade is key..it's nice to see them continuing that (4>3GS>3>2G). The cameras on the 2G and 3 were horrendous. I've taken some pretty sweet shots with my 3GS, though....and about GD time they put a flash on the damn thing.
720p video recording will come in handy when I'm doing 60-130 runs, so that's nice. The increased memory is even better (3G suffered massively from running out of memory, which was the crux of many of its performance issues), although @ 256MB, my 3GS has never run out of memory (I have an app that tracks it, and will free up memory on command).
The screen is absolutely amazing. The resolution is higher than just about any other smartphone, as well.
I could keep going on, but it's a purchase that I had no question about making, even before the leak, before WWDC, etc. I was committed.
So for you serious iPhone guys is there a trick with the contracts to upgrading that frequently or do you just pay full price? I spent the last few years in Germany and just picked a 3GS when I got back stateside, but it's only 6'ish months old. I have to admit the iPhone 4 has got me really interested as well.
I use the upgrade price every 2 years. Other than that I pay the full price or '1-year upgrade' which is a little cheaper. I paid full for first generation, upgrade price for 2nd, 1-year upgrade for 3rd generation, and now I get a discount for the fourth gen. There's usually large cosmetic and hardware upgrades every two years so I lined it up with that timeline.*
I just got it. Havent been able to play with it. Im doing the activation/sync right now.... When you turn it on for the first time, the only thing you can do is make emergency calls until you connect to iTunes and activate. From what I can tell, the resolution on the screen is a HUGE difference from my 3GS. The screen looks so damn sharp its crazy. Its true what they said in all the reviews about "it looks like you are looking at text printed on a paper".
Now I need to find someone else with it so I can try out facetime. lol
Got mine around 10 am this morning. Two iP4s arrived. One worked, the other one was is bricked. So now I'm taking it into Apple tomorrow morning at 10. They are going to swap it for me and no waiting in lines.
