    BMW cancels the 335 diesel for the F30 3 series generation in favor of a hybrid model, the 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 3

    And the good news from BMW just continues to roll in. Was it not bad enough the US will not get the M550d, X5 M50d, or X6 M50d? To make matters worse, one of the few diesel options we actually had in the USA from BMW is now being taken away from us. Why? BMW wants us to buy their upcoming hybrid 3 series instead. They are slowly conditioning the US market toward electric powertrains it seems in preparation for the all electric "i" brand. So, the 335d is axed in favor of a hybrid.

    BMW does not seem to pay attention to the fact the hybrid models are not selling. The X6 hybrid was cancelled last year. Diesel BMW models on the other hand sell out very quickly and are in high demand. Is someone at BMWNA playing a cruel joke or just getting high and flipping coins to make business decisions?

    The ActiveHybrid 3 will have an N55 six cylinder in addition to a 55 horsepower electric motor. We hope it falls on its face just like the X6 and we get our diesel back.

    this may not be a suitable replacement for the 335d, but this will be fast. it has mechanical boost and electric boost as well. wastegate can be adjusted. if it can top diesel economy, I'd be surprised. To offer both cars, would be cannibalizing. I have no clue which one would cost more, but I'd guess the hybrid, it also has a battery and more complexity to fail.

    What the hell is wrong with BMW? I give up, they are really not doing diesels justice, nor are they appealing to those who know the true value of diesel over hybrid... What they need to do is make a diesel hybrid, not a gas hybrid...

    The hybrid will also be very heavy.

    Did they really cancel the diesel? Last time I asked my sales advisor she said we were getting the hybrid and a 325d. This is terrible news, if true.

    It sure looks like the 335d is gone and I doubt we will see a 325d.

    Doesn't surprise me. BMW must have not seen the sales numbers they wanted.

    I believe the $4,000 eco credit and big incentives made the US diesel sales numbers look better than they really were.

    Maybe we should wait and see how the activehybrid 3 performs. It sounds promising having the n55 mated with a 50 hp electric motor. I don't know.

    I did like the 335d though.

    Even if the hybrid performs well it does not justify eliminating diesel options.

    I would have bought the 335d instead of the 335i but they did not offer a manual transmission. In my opinion, this is where they failed with the diesel in 3-series.

    Diesel is getting its traditional advantages vs gasoline engines (better mpg, lower fuel cost per mile travelled) steadily eroded by better gasoline engine and now hybrid performance, and maybe bmw sees some of that. More likely they just didnt see the sales numbers they were hoping for and wanted some of those prius sales numbers.

    If this is true why are the majority of BMW's in Europe diesels?

    I think BMW has created a very specific divide of electric/hybrid mentality in the USA and diesel mentality in Europe.

    Hybrid performance my ass. It's almost never in electric mode.

    I drove a GL450 hybrid Benz with my old shop foreman once. We tried everything to make it stay in electric mode without activating the engine.

    The game for a day was see who can make the electric motor stay on longest. If you so much as breathed on tHe gas pedal, the engine would roar to life. Not to mentIon in full electRic mode it got barely 10 miles before the battery was critical.

    The great part was that you could not finance it. Why? Because the company that made the batteries went bankrupt and closed its doors when the economy tanked. So at the end of the lease, Benz buys it back and destroys them.

    If you have any major failure of the battery, Benz will either give you a new car or give you credit towards another model. Gee this hybrid thing sounds like a real earth loving idea.

    In europe diesel is a lot cheaper that petrol. Also tax policies favor diesel cars over there.

    Diesel is more expensive than premium gas in the US. It is stupid, since diesel is actually cheaper to produce. Also the excise tax on diesel is higher than gasoline.

    I don't think it is bmw doing the dividing.

    BMW had huge incentives on the 335d and X5d. Selling over $10,000 off msrp on some vehicles. Lease deals were dirt cheap and they still had trouble moving diesels here.

    The refineries need to bump up production of diesel, create more supply and drive prices down. The government needs to stop taxing diesel more.

    In some cases dealers just didn't want them on their lot. A lot easier to move 328's and 335's.

    If you see a 335d sitting on a lot, I am willing to bet that dealer will sell it to you at a huge discount. If they were rare or hard to get, that would not be the case.

    BMW's "hybrid" tech has almost nothing in common with Toyota's approach - it's much more similar to Honda's tech. BMW developed the electric tranny with GM and Mercedes, and it can supplement the gas engine, but is virtually worthless for electric only propulsion. BMW is behind on hybrid tech, which is why they are partnering with someone - I think Puegot.

    Automobile Magazine has stated that BMW is bringing over the 4 cylinder 3 series. I can't link an article because it's not on their website, only in the print magazine.
