You can just buy them ready to run, no building needed.

I used to race them 30 years agoClick here to enlarge

Just sold my last one a few years back.

What are you interested in, on road or off road. For off road you really can't beat Associated. It will take a few nights to build it, but it is WELL worth it. Building your own shocks and setting them up was like feeding candy to a baby for meClick here to enlarge

Traxas makes some nice ready to run units, but I am old school and really like the building better.

First question would probably be How old is your son?
Will this be his playtoy or yours?
Small boys probably would love off road cars that can do backflips and $#@!, can handle a pool of mud and a control unit that can take dropping it into sand and survive splatter (probably electric) , while you probably would be more into highly adjustable road nitro/meth fueled road racer on slicks...

I will be doing offroad, he is 2 now but I want to get him into Hobby grade RC trucks. Not stupid new bright toys that break when you open the box.

I want to build it from scratch, kit truck.

I was looking at the traxxas stampede 4x4 and the losi speed T or desert truck. I have heard bad reviews about the Speed T though.

Everything is crazy now. Lipo batteries, brushless systems and digital etc... When I used RC cars 12 years ago nicad batteries were the $#@! and motors were brushed. Brushless was super expensive. Stuff is crazy now!

I have alot of RC car, for what you are looking for I would suggest the Traxxas Slash 4x4 with the brusless motor, I had a Stampede but ir was alwas breaking A-arms and suspension components. The Slash has been trouble free and I really beat on it. The only thing I have replaced is tires and lexan body.

I also have a collection of old school vintage Tamiya buggies that I have been picking up on e-bay and resporing back to mint condition.

Lipo batteries are VERY dangerous, depending on your sons age I would recomend just using the regualr NiMh but go with someting like the 8.4V or you can even upgrade to a 7 or even 8 cell NiMh for a few extra MPH. Lipo bateries can expole or catch fire and they even come with a "fire bag" to be used when charging becuase they do blow up more often that you would think, I have witnessed it twice with my own eyes. Once he get a little more responsible upgrade to the Lipo. Plus the Lipo will make it so fast that if he is inexperienced he's just gonna wreck the car and cause expensive damage.

Do yourself a favor and purcahse the upgraded charger and an extra battery to minimize downtime, the charger that comes with the car sucks and takes hours to charge, a $60 quick charger can charge a 8.4v 7 cell in about 25 mins.

    Right on!

Stick with any GOOD ni-cad pack until he become good. At 2, this will be some time, IMHO. I have my 5 year old kid racing real go karts, but he has a simple Niko RC vette for now. The GOOD ones, go WAY TOOOOOO fast for a 2 year to handle. As JRcart siad, think MANY expensive repairs here, LOL

Gas powered is the way to go depending on the kids age. Nitro fuel!! I enjoyed offroad more than the street cars. The street cars are much faster, more so when you get one that shifts gears but the offroad can take more of a beating and keep on going.

    Its a great hobby.

I don't agree, especially for a kid. I have several nitro powered RC cars and they are a hassel, carbss getted gummed if not run for a while, tuning can be tempramental and they break easier than electric and they are noisy and piss off the neighbors. Besides I will put a Lipo battery, brushless electric car up against a nitro car and the Lipo car will beat the nitro car on any type of course except maybe an all out top speed run, electric have way more torque and can out excelerate a nitro car out of a corner. Don't get me wrong, nitro are a blast but for what the OP is looking for not the best option.

My 2x4 Traxxas Slash, fast as hell but 2wd only works on pavement or very very hard packed clay or dirt, anything loose or sandy and it just spins its tires.

Sounds like you got the experience. I havent touched an RC car in at least 15 years. 15 years ago a battery car could not touch a gas powered car. Also being able to use the car at the time for longer than 5 minutes was a problem on battery where you could get 15 mins off a fuel tank and keep going and going for hours. Unless you bring 10 fully charged batteries you are going to be dissapointed quick because they run out so quick and then you have to wait for a recharge. Even then the gas powered guy just keeps going. The cars needed maintenence but it was a joke. I could completely break down and reassemble an engine in the field in 10 mins. The only time things became an issue was when something broke. We used to race in a big lot across the street from a place called Raceway Hobbies. When something broke we just ran across the street and got the part. Ahhh good times.

Like I said, its been a while, but back then gas was the only way to go when you got into the top end cars.

My collection of vintage 1980s Tamiya Buggies, I have restored all of them to stock mint condition. Slow fragile and expensive, but I had some when I was a kid so I've been buying them on ebay for the past couple years and fixing them up.
