Post season damage analysis - Blackstone Labs UOA Report

Sent an oil sample down to Blackstone Labs for analysis to see what they thought of the oil in the car. Results came back pretty good actually. One thing I was told is to stay away from using tap water for meth/water injection as it introduces minerals (sodium in this report) that sometimes skew end results the analysis reports produce. Going forward for me it'll be 100% meth when I do want to run it.

If you've been beating on your car for a while I highly recommend getting a report from Blackstone. I'll be doing this going forward more regularly.

I've recently changed oil to OEM BMW 5W-30 and will send that down once 10,000km of easy winter driving is up just to compare against a hard driven 8,000km oil sample attached above.

Blackstone is great. I use 100% meth for this reason though.

Looks like your oil is just fine. If you're gonna mix meth, use distilled water!

100% meth for me all the time. Thanks Dzenno, I think I will follow your lead here and send in a sample.

Came out to $35 but I wanted the TBN which is I think $10 extra...so a basic used oil analysis (UOA) is $25 I think...for more info on what TBN is and general UOA stuff see here:

IMHO its a great service to have and I'll be doing this once or twice a year going forward as I intend on keeping this car for a few more years...its great at picking up engine wear and letting you know if anything major is going early on so you can either fix it or get rid of your car while there's still time Click here to enlarge

You need to go to their site and order an oil sample kit which is free and shipped to your door so you have it for the next oil change

This was Castrol Edge 5w-30 synthetic "with Titanium" lol its the new gold bottle they recently released, pretty expensive stuff...for my current oil i've gone back to OEM BMW 5w-30 to see how it compares...i'll be driving the car like 99.9% of the people drive their car for the next 5k miles and send it down again to see if there's any change as opposed to this previous sample that had the car go to hell and back, twice..

Yeah, I've been curious about Rotella as well. It would be interesting to see how it compares. Also Dzenno, update us in 8k!

I'm interested to see the results for the Rotella. I just switched to it my last oil change.

Got my UOA back for the Rotalla T6; pretty impressive. I didn't divulge the fact I didn't change the oil filter at the last oil change (I did this time however). They are recommending going out to 7500 miles on the next oil change, but I might creep it out to 6500 first, then 7500 if the UOA looks good.

I'm wondering how they got the universal averages different on mine and your reports...i know on mine they made a mistake and initially compared them to the E30 M3 engine which I had them correct and the report I posted above shows the updated report...now yours shows fairly different universal averages again...

I guess the universal averages are based on the mileage...in any case, report looks spotless, blackstone labs ftw!

Yeah I was a little confused over the universal averages as well. The report seems to indicate that the universal averages are based on engine type and oil change interval only. However, the tutorial on Blackstone Labs' website says this about the universal averages: "This column shows average wear for all the samples we've seen for this engine. The additives in this column are a mix of all different types of oils, so you can't compare them to your sample."

I'm assuming the additive comment doesn't pertain to the wear metals, otherwise, what's the point of the UOA in the first place Click here to enlarge

Me too, if I was to listen to the bad information out there about the high levels of magnesium and ZDDP in HDEO's messing up catalytic converters or causing "excessive wear", I would never have switched from PCMO. It meets API SM, so it has to be safe (and the proof is in the pudding). As far as cold start viscosity, I'm not concerned at all, considering the number of folks in colder climates that run it in their gassers with fantastic results. The ZDDP will help protect valves, cams, etc.

Well, I just changed my oil with some fresh Mobil 1 0w-40. I run 7500 miles between oil changes, which is about every 6 months for me. I think I'm going for the rotella next time.
