Why isn't it? Cool to see swaps and the M50 forum could use more activity.

Well umm... What we are doing is highly complicated and classified. We are actually taking a 3.0L E36 M3 S50 motor, and doing some witchcraft to make it fit. It's a very touchy subject as many a people have tried this swap countless times and all have failed. We are really crossing our fingers on this one hoping to be the first. We believe that after months of trolling the forums we have successfully found all the necessary parts to pull this one off. Wish us luck as this has been consuming months of our time and brain power.

Srsly? It's an S50 in an E30, pretty sure there are more 24v E30's driving around than there are M20 powered cars

I'm newb when it comes to this. But hasn't the I6 swap into an E30 been done many times? Or was it not with the S50, but maybe M50? I don't know.

My post was sarcastic. One of these swaps happens every week somewhere I'm sure, it's a VERY common swap

I don't understand why they didn't just name the US motors M50B30 and M52B32, because they are not true S-series motors....

Because the M division still had something to do with them.

M division also built the 1M, but it still "only has a N54 engine"...

    these motors should be M50/52 B30/32, it's my opinion... and it's 100% valid !

To be a S** motor it would have to have ITB for starters...

That said... S63N would not be considered a true S series motor... and to many it is not...

Not even sure i like the sound from it, at least not in the X5 Click here to enlarge

Because they didn't touch the motor, that is my point.

Traditionally, yes, but with the turbo motors that changed.

Unlike other M models (like the M3 and M5) which use M-derived engines named Sxx, the 1 Series M Coupe uses a M-tuned, twin turbocharged version of the N54 engine, as found in the 335is and Z4sDrive35is.

How is that different from the S50US and S52US motors... since they are M50 and M52 motors with increased displacement, and a sighty different camshaft profile Click here to enlarge

It would just make things 10x more simple to be able to say M50B30 or M52B32... as i see everyone talking about S50 or S52 and it confuses me, as i see the S50 and S52 motors to be 286-317hp Click here to enlarge

Umm, because there are internal mechanical changes vs. just a different tune on a motor already available in the same chassis?

But sticky, there is M50B20 M52B23... They have internal mechanical changes, but are still classed as M5X motors.[/COLOR]

S50=M50B30 S52=M52B32, it's just a glorified 3er motor, nothing special, just a bit more displacement...

    'Mericuhhhh!!! Fails this time

Anyhow, got the motor running finally. We were so puzzled trying to track down a problem. The car had an M50 Non-Vanos in it. The S50 that we swapped in was a bare block, so lots of the accessories etc were swapped over. We swapped over the front timing pully and trigger wheel. Went to start it up, and it's just constantly shooting flames out the exhaust (Open Longtubes). At first we were getting no spark because the maps were corrupted in the tune. Went in fixed that. Figured the flames were from unburnt fuel, but it just kept doing it and doing it. Ohm'd out the crank and cam pos sensors. Changed out the cam position sensor. Still same damn thing. Pulled the valve cover to check mechanical timing. Still spot on. Then we realize, hmmmmm what about the trigger wheel. Pull the one of the parts car and pull the one off the E30. Compare them, and that was the problem. The timing mark for the Crank position sensor is about 45* off on the NV as compared to a vanos one.

Buttoning up the exhaust today. Expect some wicked burnout videos this afternoon

They are "S" motors though despite sharing a lot in common with M50's they still had M development and changes. Displacement is a significant change in NA cars especially. They got more than just a tune...

Same head, same block. Different displacement, and different cams.
