    e39 m5 vs e92/e90 m3

Just a general question... Has anyone driven each of these cars? I saw a beautiful (Imola?) red M5 today while driving to work. I was curious about it - so did a little searching on the web. Found that it has some serious power (didn't know it was in the 400 range - thought only the v10 was a monster). How does this car compare to the current M3?

I am thinking that in the handling/braking/tech department - it wouldn't be as good; I am more curious about the raw performance of the car. I know the numbers are faster on the M3, just curious how it feels, tuned or not, etc...

    Cheers.

    friend had the m5... not too impressive. You'd be happier with the E46 m3 over the E39 m5. I say e46 or e9x M3 over that m5.

Never driven an e92/90m only the e39 m5. I really fell in love with the smooth shifting and power it had. Wanted one until I drove my 335. I'm not a lot of help on this comparison, sorry.

M3 isn't a friendly in city. Lack of torque in low RPM's makes you rev higher and also heavily decreases MPG.
in the other hand, S62 makes plenty of creamy low end that you can start 2nd gear with no problems.

in my opinion a Healthy FBO E39 will be dead even with a tuned 6MT E90.

In all seriousness, a friend of mine has(had?) an E39 m5 and he's told me that he has(had?) alot of trouble with the maintenance. Lots of gremlins,etc...but I don't know too many E39 M5 owners.

    ...here's a tribute:

The E92 M3 is going to be a lot more fun to drive.
