So what was rumored as an M1 then said to be a 135is may now be a 1M? Just pick one!

This M1, 1M, 135is shuffle is really driving me nuts.

Here is a recap for all of you:

    - Edmunds has been carrying the story that there will not be an M1, no way, 135is.
    - Dr. Kay Segler from BMW said there would not be an M1. However, BMW has gone back on their word a few times as of late.
    - Some random forum no one has ever heard of has been playing up the M1.
    - BMWblog can't make up their minds and are just carrying both stories.

So which is it? I contacted a friend in Germany who works at BMW but he says there is no M1. However, he is not exactly a high up exec. Take a look at these spy photos and video testing on the ring and make up your own mind.

The car supposedly features a tweaked N55 which differs from reports earlier saying it would have a tweaked N54. There will be an LSD. The wider fenders definitely now change the whole perception and there has been no comment from Inside Line regarding these new photos:

This is a potentially big development.

This may be a great drivers car providing they keep the weight in check. This may also be nothing.

If that is a carbon roof, it has to be an M.

Thats not a carbon roof, just a big moonroof. Check out the roof on the first pic, from the back of the car. Either they just painted half the roof or its glass...

Some people are saying it is disguised to look like a moonroof and painted... look at the width.

    Correct not a carbon roof.

At the same time it is not a big moonroof, either.

Blow up the pic, you can see it is a skin just riveted in place. They are doing some testing with moonroof removed, most likely meaning future carbon roof.

You can easily see the rivets around the entire parameter of that piece.

Circled a couple of the rivets. Definitely tempory piece for testing.

I don't know, it showed, and now it isn't showing.

    The VB4 attachment system sucks.

Yeah that attachment system has me confused for some reason. It should work?

Wonder if they are not going to do a quad exhaust, like the e36 M3?

    This car is very interesting.

I remember when they were testing the GTS on the ring. Not too long after that bmw had a GTS press release, surprising everyone.

VB 4 just has annoying bugs but it is better to have the newest software. VB 4 has its glitches which will get worked out but overall it functions much better. The attachment system is a big annoyance though.

The E36 M3 never had a quad exhaust and I don't see any reason for a quad exhaust on an I6 other than for looks. The E46 M3's exhaust was largely just for looks.

BMW may have been testing the GTS was earlier under the guise of the CSL though. We will never have the true story.

Yup, I was aware of e36 not having quads. I owned one. Loved that thing.

Figured they will do the single sided exhaust like the old days. Less weight anyways.

Like you said the question is, will it have an M-badge.

Ah, you wrote not. I'll blame it on the beers Click here to enlarge

I don't see any way it can't have an M badge at this point. LSD is stated although I don't know how they determined that exactly unless they asked.

The carbon roof certainly means M badge as no BMW with a carbon hood has ever been made without one.

Lastly, wider fenders usually means M these days. I can't remember the last time we saw wider fenders from the standard model without it being an M. Maybe the 2002 turbo in the 70's was the last time it happened?

I just wish we could figure out if this means no more 135is or if this is coming after the 135is.

I don't see how they could squeeze the 135is in between the current model and the M version without pushing the price for the M version into M3 range, which I don't think they would want to do.

Likely true but perhaps this model testing is something we won't see?

This could also be a homologation car for yet-unnamed purposes, a la E46 M3 GTR. It's hard to believe that BMW would offer an M1, only because it would be a hop, skip and jump away from spanking the current M3 performance-wise at a lower price tag.

See my post below. The car has a wider track, a differential, M like suspension (as shown in the latest 'ring vid), M seats spied along with a M stitched steering wheel and red tach/speedo needles which of course are found on M cars. I say it's a M.....
