Need help, Twin Turbo 2001-2002 M5

Well my neighbor needs help...he took on the project of turboing his 2001-2002 M5, I am not familiar with the motor but he has already done all hard labor and work on the motor, tuirbos are installed and the car just needs tuning to get it running. Can anyone point me in the right direction so I cold pass this on to him? I will be taking pictures on what set up he has. Any input is much appreciated.

Pictures of this setup would be much appreciated, there really aren't any successful twin turbo S62's that I know of in the USA.

I'm impressed he did the hardware, that is tough in of itself.

The real question mark is the tuning as he knows.

I think a standalone application with custom tuning might be best, try contacting Neel at Apex Speed Technology (pm him here: http://www.bimmerboost.com/member.ph...eed-Technology ).

Someone in Ukraine got a turbo S62 (E39 M5) running but that won't do us much good here.

I dont mean to sound like an ass, why didnt he investigate whether his hardware can even be tuned before designing the turbo kit?

That is a very good question...I don't know, seems like he is determined to get this thing running. Maybe he thought it would be eassier but apparently not. At this point I am trying to gather as much info to take to him and let him make the decision from there.

It's going to be pretty much impossible to do it on the factory DME unless he gets some big name tuner like Dinan to dedicate substantial resources to it.

I think it's going to come down to either a standalone or piggyback setup.

I think the piggy back set up is the way to go...but even thats complicated from what I heard.

This is what Neel from Apex speed recommended:

Another option is an interceptor such as the Haltech Interceptor or AEM FIC. These can add fuel and retard timing, but he says installing them is a challenge.

Just go standalone if you're going to tune it. Full control over the engine is probably what you want for a setup like this.

There you go, that will work and likely wouldn't have the dash problems a full standalone setup would have.

George at ICS (in Stamford Connecticut I believe) has used FICs on M62s. I know the DME is likely to be a different one (but to be honest I don't know if the M5s used the same DME as the later M62 cars), but I suspect there may be a lot of similarities in the wiring and the tuning. If you're in NYC, I think this is something to take a look at.

Neel at Apex Speed has been super helpful and forthcoming with information in my thread on this forum about using an FIC. But isn't he on the wrong end of the continent?

Oh, and after spending some significant quality time under my 540i pondering where to place turbo(s), I would also REEEEEEEEALY like to see some pics of his install. It doesn't look like an easy packaging job in the least to me. . .

How about Maximum PSI? We also fly worldwide for tuning; we're doing a project in New York right now.

No prob and yes, eager anticipation for those pictures! Nobody has really done twin turbo hardware so the owner has blazed a trail.

MaxPsi. He should give them a call. If he's serious he should work with maxPsi and neel@apex. I seen a top mount single turbo 540. It was allshow tho no GO.

It was a terrible purple baller machine! Lol

Dont want to discourage you, but the S62 is a bad platform for F/I, either SC or Turbo.

It can be done, but it requires a lot of R&D.

The S62 came out by 1999. Its been 12 years and we have not seen healthy turbocharged S62s running around.

hpf started and quit the E39 M5 turbo kit.

I did work on several twin supercharged S62s, built engines, and did not like the S62.

Your neighbour better swap a S54 and an aftermarket FI kit and be happy. Or else the R&D will be a big burden. Just my 2 cents...

That is a very sensible post. Do you feel that pretty much the same comments apply to the M62 in the e39 540i?

Seems like about half the time I think it might be fun to give something mild a try with the M62, and then the rest of the time I feel like it's a nice car in need of an LSx motor or now a 2JZ.... Blasphemy, but come on!!!

This motor just needs good electronics controls and no one has invested in that. That's why I'm not a big fan of FIC with this. If you could do a standalone that controls everything and deal with the cruise control and dash, it could work $#@!in.

But then again, I always say that....
