I wouldn't worry about cooling right now, just don't beat on the car when its insanely hot out. I had a giac stg 1 tune and before that, a procede V4 for all of last summer and never had any overheating/limp mode issues. You have to beat on the car pretty good to get a issue.

That being said, I now have a helix IC and a AR stg 1 oil cooler kit. The car never gets hot even when i drive it hard, I'm pretty happy. Don't you have a stock oil cooler in your 08? I thought only the 07's came without oil coolers.

+1 , I think its funny when everyone is so worried about the hot temps and not having a oil cooler. With all your mods, you still don't have a oil cooler and have no issues!!! IMO You honestly dont' need one unless you track the car on a road course. I don't track the car but I wanted one just b/c.

with a cooler we see a max of 235...consistently beating on it. Driving around town is about 210.

Good question. I would imagine if we could find the part number than we could get one of the dealers that are on the various forums to order it. I would also be interested to see how the package performs. Like I said though I haven't even heard of someone trying it.

    http://www.shopbmwusa.com/ProductDet...2748&perf=true
Effects of the modifications to the engine tuning parameters include: Increased torque of 317ft-lbs. (manual transmissions) and 332ft-lbs (automatic transmissions) available from just 1,500 rpm. Increased power output of 20 horsepower from 300 to 320hp. Faster acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (0.2 seconds quicker than the standard model). Even with this increased power, the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions remain the same as for the standard model. To deal with the extra heat generated as a result of the engine modifications, an additional radiator, air intakes and a more powerful fan for the main radiator are incorporated into each kit.
I would like to see the new intakes and the additional radiator as well. All of it sounds good, minus the tuning...I'll stick with BMW for that.

Interesting thing is that it make about what the "1M" does power wise according to the description...which means there is definitely no engine benefit to the 1M.

Hmm, it should be possible to get these parts without the BMW tune. If anyone really needs the cooling those parts should make a nice difference.

Very good question but I do not know.

I think you should definitely look into a FMIC and meth though...

I'm willing to bet the 5 series already has the larger fan to deal with the extra heat generated when pulling around the additional weight. Also do you think that the additional radiator is an oil cooler by chance?

Can anyone confirm this? Realoem.com should show it pretty easily.

If you are talking about the rad in the BMW performance kit, it is not a oil cooler it is an extra rad, I have it but did not installed it yet.

I was talking about if it would fit the E60 5 series with the N54.

Seems like a larger radiator would be the first course of action, then oil cooler, then FMIC. Extra radiator is kluge and introduces two more possible points of failure.

For those with Steptronic, an auxiliary ATF cooler is a must.

Fans have no effect above 20 mph.

Good point. I bet you are right.

That being said...I bet the V8 5er has a larger radiator...maybe it could be made to fit...custom brackets likely....I could see that be feasible though.

Yes, Mr. 5 from N54tech had to order it from Germany at the time, bu whent he got it he did not want to miss with his CAI set up, he also mentioned that the bigger fan wouldn't make a difference, but the rad would.

So I bought it from him.

Good to know it can be ordered separately. I do think he is wrong about the fan though. But that being said the "Max Cool" Mode on the JB4 likely accomplishes the same if not more.

Yes, I am glad that Terry put that function in the JB4, so when I put the rad in and see how that works.

I'm on of those track guys from E90crap.com, that worked on this problem since I owned the car. I started out without any oil cooler at all, and then retrofitted both the oem, and ar design oil cooler. Recently I stumbled unto a much better solution for our high temps. First some quick points I learned from reading The N54 engine brochure, as well as brochures from the engine thermostat maker whaler.

    1. Our car runs hot because both the oil, and water is diverted to help cool the turbos, which recycle exhaust gasses that can be as hot as: 1,500 degrees

    2. Our ecu has 4 different modes it can run in, to target these four cylinder head temperatures (+ 20 degrees to get the temperature at the pan, which is what you see on your guage):
    108C ECO mode
    104C Normal mode
    95C High mode
    90C High + map-thermostat mode

.....................TO be continued tomorrow, with my conclusion, and current solution to oil temps.
