    BMW upgraded their iDrive systems in 2009 (CIC) which allows for DVDs to be played using the in-dash DVD system. Unfortunately, we are greeted with a "For your safety, video is only available when parked" message and and blank screen.

    This is only compatible with CiC-based iDrive (09+). MY08 iDrive (CCC-based) does not have DVD playback capabilities.

    Can someone get an external DVD player for '08 and have it play on the Idrive screen?

    Sure, you would use the Video Source Module instead:



    eas - Video Source Module (VSM) - e9x 3-Series, including M3 (MY06-MY08)

    I wold rather use an iPod than carry DVDs around, but either option is available.
