Great runs! Can't wait til I can get back out there.

Crank and Rods are forged. Rods are very beefy for stock rods. Pistons will give up before any other parts....I Know from experience.

What was the end result on the studs? Did ARP make custom ones or are you modifying off-the-shelf studs?

This is exactly what I encountered when my shop had contacted ARP about a month or so ago. They said they didn't have the sizes in stock and wouldn't make me a set (unless we ordered a bunch). I'm...

Lol. Actually, yes we did try this. I should post up the screenshot of the text where I tell my shop "try asking it nicely to come off"

A whole can

Tried it, didn't work.

From the hub.

Trying to send my axles out to DSS because of what they will need to ensue in the near future.
The problem is they WILL NOT come off. They are supposed to be easy to get off, but absolutely will...

I highly doubt they can take 800whp. We have seen 2 cars do over 700whp on a dyno (on a dynojet, which puts far less stress than a real world pull), but not much else other than that. Let's wait and...

lol I got neg repped because I informed everyone that the N54 had hypereutectic pistons.....sigh....I have so much more awesome info that I can share.
06-26-2013, 04:48 PM
So what do I win?
I knew this because I too have seen the inside of the pistons.
06-26-2013, 01:51 PM
ajm8127 - that is exactly what I thought when I was holding the pistons in my hand and inspecting them. Great info.
I think they are cast, more specifically:...

Can you get an explanation of why? I still think they are cast.

alex@ABRhouston - great info.
A couple questions:
1. you mention that the pistons are forged. Are you sure about that? I don't think they are by inspecting them. You might have a better trained...
I think there is one FFTEC single that has been testing e85. Not completely sure though. Others can't really run it until Shiv releases some tune for it.

Getting all the wiring off the engine is a nightmare too. Makes for a nice rat's nest.
06-24-2013, 01:31 PM
Thank you very much. I needed this info.
06-23-2013, 07:35 PM
Can you give us the hours you would quote for an RnR? I want to hear someone's numbers for comparison. Thanks.

Looks like VAC lowered their prices from about 3 months ago.
06-23-2013, 12:32 AM
Just checked some papers and it's more like $4000. But that also includes extra coatings and options.
VAC website - piston kit starts at $1050 plus $360 for coatings, $325 for anodized rings,...

Add the $5k for the rods and pistons and you're at $11k.
What would you charge to drop the engine and put it back in? Just curious how many hours you would consider it.
06-22-2013, 12:43 PM
It's going to be tough to get a price because there are only a handful of built N54s.
Plan on $12k-15k for cost of pistons/rod, drop engine, disassembly, machine work, assembly of new...

I wish I knew the answers to the ARP questions. Maybe if other people start calling and asking, they'll realize the market is about to grow.

Pistons will be the first to go. Rods on this car are very robust.
