The S85 motor really deserves more love. Projects like this remind us that if BMW wanted to, they could have shoved that V10 in the M3 and abused almost any of their competition. But BMW didn't, so we are thankful for enthusiasts who are willing to step up to the plate. This swap was done using a Pectecl SQ6M ECU and to have the dash fully compatible it was swapped out for a Cosworth Dash. Check out the build pics, details, and videos below.
Dynotorque in the UK is responsible for this swap. The E92 M3 6 speed is used which is basically the same as the E60 M5 6 speed however remember that was not available in the UK. The front crossmember was scalloped in order for the V10 to fit which it does pretty well along with the transmission. The stock E60 M5 headers are used and surprisingly fit although strong motor mounts were necessary as 5 mm of movement and they would rub. We would like to see what it puts down to the tire with tuning on the Pectel but can't complain, this is a very nice swap.
A remanufactured S85 is $26,994 and new one is $39,357 + all ancillaries. And they are no longer in production as you guys already know. So a used one with all the needed items for $15,000 is good. I think there will be more of these builds as guys build cars with the S85 V10 stuffed in them. What can I come up with?
The S85 and the sound it makes, is the reason I think the E60 M5 is and will be legendary. No BMW will ever sound as good.
That motor and the S65 deserved better than to just be dropped with no further notice. The S65 at least deserves a home in a Z4 M. The S85 in stroked form should have seen further development. That one-off M5 CSL should have seen production or an M6 based on it.
I agree with you sticky. The costs would have been prohibitively expensive, but some real limited editions (let's say 100 each of model) from BMW AG would have been an S85 engine stuffed in to an E90, E92 and E93 M3s from the factory. And then stuff the S65 V8 in the E89 Z4 and just call it M Roadster. That is the car that I still think is coming to light. Nice to dream. Or just build it myself.
guys how about an s85 mid engine r8 fighter!!! And god forbid they did it in stroker trim so that it would be in the area of 630bhp and with my current tune i can spin my motor to 8600 rpms!!! So with a factory setup and the right cams you can probably spin it to 9000rpm redline. The sound of that car would bring tears to the eyes of enthusiast and maybe even approach the legendary carrera gt
I think these motors are going to be awesome for swaps for years to come. My feeling is that the replacement DI turbo motors won't really do anything better except fuel economy and emissions, and they'll be harder to mod.

Sad, sad day indeed for the BMW community. The aftermarket tuning game is not an easy one. Especially when it comes to BMW's these days with ever increasing sophistication of their electronics and...

So you know that awesome BMW S85 V10 revving over 8000 rpm giving somewhat of a direct link to the Motorsport division that seemed equally at home in an Italian exotic as it did under the hood of a...

I attended Bimmerfest 2013 and this was my first time at Bimmerfest. Why you ask? Well, because Tim who owns BimmerFest banned me from the BimmerFest forum once I started BimmerBoost. Well, bygones...
