• E90 N52 6 cylinder stock and tuned engine dyno comparison, 325i, 328i, and 330i

      OE Tuning recently tuned three N52 based E90 3 series. The first car was a 2006 E90 325i on 91 octane that was completely stock. The second car was an E90 328i also on 91 octane and completely stock. The E90 330i had an aftermarket filter and BMW performance exhaust, also on 91 pump gas. These cars all share the same basic motor but with different intake plenum designs and tunes. They were all flashed with an off the shelf tune available from OE Tuning for $395. The results are quite interesting, check out the graphs below.

        Wow, that is quite impressive, especially for the 325i, I'd definitely get this if we still had the E90 325i.

        The 325 is in the mildest state of tune so not really a surprise. I'm just surprised they don't really all end up in the same place.

        The 330 makes sense with the filter and exhaust I suppose. I guess the different intake manifold is what separates them.

        Looks solid. I wonder if anyone that forums will pick up a set of those headers that are available. It would be interesting to see what they could do real world with a tune to take advantage of them

        I think the numbers on the standard 330i are horrible. Probably due to your 91 octane pumpgas.
        They should do about 255bhp with that engine stock...

        it's on wheels not crank , plus it's a 4 years old car not a new model. but yes numbers are a bit low compared to those two others

        The 330 baseline is actually pretty solid. Also, that dyno dynamics isn't reading all that low...

        Mmm, I allways thought whp against crankhp means -15% tops.
        255-(255x0.15)=216 whp.
        Still 25 hp in it somewhere...

        David, it's a dyno dynamics. 15% doesn't exactly hold true for it.

        15% drivetrain losses work much better with dynojets.

        Mmm, can someone please post a comparisin chart which shows different outcome with one reference engine / car so the difference between various dyno methods / systems becomes clear?

        Well, no, not really.

        Unfortunately there are different dynos and even then different conditions and different fuels. No way to make everything perfect but one thing that the dyno dynamics has is shootout mode which essentially makes them all read the same.

        Why don't people use it? Because owners hate low numbers.

        so which is correct ? DD reads low or DJ reads high?

        Anyway. Those are REALLY solid numbers on a DD. My car (OE tuned E46 330i) makes BARELY more than an E90 325 does TUNED! The newer N-series engines are just better. Good work, Jeremy

        Just as Sticky said, the rated power for any car is at the crankshaft. Meaning the engine separate from the chassis, not connected to anything. Dyno dynamics dynomometers read very low. It's important not to get caught up in max numbers, but in the relative gain made after tuning.

        you miss understood it , i thought standard dyno was Mustang dyno but i found out i was wrong about the whole thing

        Heh, tough to answer as it can be both.

        Unmolested DD's read low. DJ's read accurately IMO based on drivetrain losses.

        I would love to get my car dyno'd on a DJ soon to see what it makes compared to my run on a 179 afer-tune whp on a DD. it should *should* make 210 whp or slightly more if im lucky. I'm also not sure what effect my 3.38 diff (as opposed to the 2.93 I had during the first run) would have. Soon I will do this. Click here to enlarge

        I have dynojet and DD numbers from the OE dyno. Don't expect huge gains going to a Dynojet but their DD does read lower.

        Those are nice numbers across the board. Just one question were any of the vehicles automatics?? If so, that would explain the 330i numbers.

        Don't know the transmission used.

        Wouldn't a manual better explain the 330i numbers?
