      Brabus has once again pulled off what few others, if anyone else, could. They unveilved a twin turbo SLS they built at Geneva. This is not a motor swap but a twin turbo setup on the M156 V8 with compression dropped down to 9.0:1 with forged pistons/internals. Custom manifolds feed two turbos they somehow got to fit neatly. Torque is raised up to 626 pound-feet which is far beyond the torque limits in the factory transmission. This does use the DCT transmission so how they did this is beyond us as our tuners tell us no one has been able to exceed these limits. It seems Brabus has made the impossible, possible.

        The trans used in the SLS is the same as found (hardware wise) in a Ferrari 458 it is not the wet clutch MCT band aid used in the SL/E, future M157s, etc.
        Ok, and torque limitations are not programmed into it in the same way?

        Edited to reflect DCT, Mercedes should also stop calling everything speedshift.

        It absolutely has limiters however what they are for a Brabus TCU may not be the same as it is for a standard issue SLS. They have the power to call Bosch, dump half a mill on the table and get 50 custom ECUs to make the TT's work at that level without a piggyback or standalone.

        Although the F458 doesn't make a boatload of TQ it does turn serious rpm, so I'm betting although it may only be rated at a certain torque rating due to the insanely high rpm it can stand, the lower rev limit of the SLS will help the trans survive vs going to 8500rpm+ despite the increased torque.

        I dont think this was an 'inside job'. I think MB and brabus are working together intentionally and MB definately helped Brabus with this... This isnt a shop hack, it has MB written all over it.

        That means inside job, from inside MB or else it wouldn't happen.

        No question they had help from MB, AMG, HWA, etc. Brabus wouldn't be able to tie their shoes without them and Bosch, and Siemens. Those are some heavy connections anyone would be glad to have. Brabus has not only the resources but the talent, engineering ability, and connections to get the job done correctly. Just a shame they charge so much, then again they are backed up 300-400 cars on any given day so why not.

        Well why does Brabus have those connections but not others?

        If others did it would really cut into the Brabus pie so how is Brabus able to maintain these special relationships? The only reason the price is so high is because there are no damn alternatives. I would like a G with an M275 in it too but not for $400k or whatever.

        What I meant was it sounds illegitimate to say 'inside job'. It just sounds if someone illegally sold information to brabus from MB, I believe it was all in legal contract and MB has a peice of this cake...
        Brabus has connections because that are in bed with MB, which is not a bad thing; they make cool cars.

        You know, I was cruising around on BMW USA's website, and noticed a link under the 7 series tab for the Alpina B7. Apparently, Alpina and BMW have cultivated a relationship where you can buy an Alpina B7 through your BMW dealer... is that correct? Why can't you buy an ACS, or Hartge through your dealer? (rhetorical)

        Not sure if it's still true, but once upon a time, every member on MB's board of directors owned a Brabus vehicle. IMHO, they are really in a whole different class vs. MKB, Kleemann, Renntech, et al. Not unlike RUF vs. TechArt, Gemballa, Manthey, et. al.

        LOL. Yeah, they certainly enjoy their acronyms. Thought it was well-known that the SLS had a true DCT (the only MB model with one); apparently not. People at least know the DCT is rear-mounted I hope. It's really a pretty neat piece of engineering.

        I think this is because Alpina (like Ruf) under German law is actually considered a manufacturer. In order to be considered that way they have to have that relationship with BMW to get the chassis and engines they do. This is something historically Alpina has had that newer tuners like Hartge won't get.

        Exactly, Ruf is in its own class just like Alpina and Brabus.

        It is pretty well known I just thought Brabus used the auto, not the DCT, for torque reasons when I read the release citing the speedshift. Just my mistake, corrected.

        i think the SLS trans. is the same as FERRARI CALIFORNIA not the 458.

        If so it is rated to handle 553 pound-feet completely stock.

        i don't think MB made it for Brabus , why would they do that? i mean more customers would go for it if it was a Black Series SLS or something like that, doesn't make sense.

        Because no one is going to pay the Brabus asking price for a regular AMG, and MB would not waste the tooling on 20-25 cars.
