      We all have heard the reports all about that BMW has been planning an X4 for some time. AutoWeek is reporting that the X4 is coming in 2014 which we already knew but the part that caught our eye is the talk about an M version. Based on the X3 but taking styling cues from the X6, this will be the best performance SUV BMW makes. The X3 is right around 4000 pounds, the X4 M likely sharing that weight. Mated to a DCT and with a version of the motor the M3 will likely get, it will be the best handling SUV in the BMW lineup as well as the hottest AWD performance BMW one can get.

      We aren't against this car. The debate for the M badge going on everything is over. It makes a lot of sense, a lot more sense than the 5300 pound X5 M or X6 M. If they are going to do M cars, might as well do them right and put the badge on cars that handle well and are lightweight offering a great driving experience. Oh, and the news on the Porsche Cajun seems to be spurring BMW to proceed as the small size SUV market is becoming trendy with Porsche wanting to get in as well as the Land Rover Evoque. Any downsides? A DCT will not allow the tow capacity an automatic would but, hey, is anyone using the "utlity" in these things any more?

        I wish these modern "SUV"s were actually capable of going off-road. It's really just a lifted car with a high center of gravity and more head room, maybe not even that.

        The Cayenne was but all that did is add a ton of weight and features nobody used. These can still handle the light off roading anyone is ever going to see.

        If you are serious about off roading, why don't you have a Wrangler done up for the task?

        I'm just used to seeing "real" SUVs down here in Texas. 4runners, Land Cruisers, Pickups, Explorers, Durangos, Jeeps, etc.

        You still see those here or anywhere else as well but they aren't "performance" suv's. They are just as out of place on a track or strip as an X6 M is in a rock climbing competition.

        But a X6 M is out of place at a track or strip as well......

        I don't think they have a place, but somehow they are money magnets......

        Yep, and so nothing we can do as long as people buy this junk. If it didn't sell they wouldn't produce it. I just can't believe there is a larger market for huge boats than the M3 GTS in the United States. Maybe the problem is us?

        Well.....i'd have to disagree. X5-6///Ms really don't belong on either strip or offroad...really!? (Jack of all trades, Master of none) And I have it from a pretty good source that X5-6///M sales have been dismal vs. BMW forecasts. The cars have been far from a business case success.

        the x5 x6 sell, or any SUV really, is because its the new minivan. people want to haul their offspring and baggage, but who wants a van? so better styling, with 4wd and this is what we get. i LOVE the X6 BTW. if i needded an SUV, it would be that, so X4 if done right could be a possibility

        Actually, the X6 has been a huge success. BMW sold double its forecast and it is bringing on the X4. The 550GT is a dismal seller, that may be what you are thinking.

        Performance SUV's are here to stay. The X6 M can beat many cars around the road course and on the strip. Unfortunately, it is 5300 pounds and not really following M ideals. When the X4 or X3 M comes out, it will redefine what a sports SUV can be.

        An X4 has the potential to be way, way better than the X6. The only downside is I don't think they will give it the V8.

        It would be the next gen M3 motor if anything.

        Who in their right mind would wanna take an X6 M offroad, unless your running from the authorities. As for it bein 'out of placed' on a track , well it beat out its competitors by a huge margin(youtube it). I think she'll do just fine with the right boots (tires)for the outback too. hehe. Meanwhile the X4 looks promising as well.

        And to say X6 is a new version of the minivan, well i must disagree. I haven't seen any soccermoms sporting one lately. They drive Q5s and Q7s and the traditional minivans. hehehe

        And how could you all possibly consider the above quoted to be 'real' suvs. There is nothing 'sport' about them. In New York we call those trucks, not to be confused with SUVs like mdx's, cayenne, X3,X5,X6,Q5,Q7,GL,FX,and RX.
