• DCT Build Part VII - Taking the BMW E92 M3 DCT to the next level, 800+ wheel horsepower clutch disc capacity

      You have seen the DCT taken apart, what it looks like inside, worn clutch discs, and brand new higher capacity clutch discs made. The new discs handle 600+ and 700+ whp respectively. With my power goals, SSP has decided to build a clutch pack that is beyond anything developed at this time for the DCT. What is the power goal? Well, it is beyond what is currently available and SSP is currently developing a clutch disc pack capable of over 800 wheel horsepower.

      How is this being done?

      The current clutch discs are of a thicker material than the stock discs. However, the stock clutch pack has 9 discs in it. By increasing the number of clutch discs they are going to increase the maximum torque capacity. By going to a thicker material and increasing the total number of discs to 11, the DCT in the BMW M3 will be taken to a level no one previously thought was possible. This is going to be similar to the GTR 1000 hp clutch setup by SSP (pictured) but the GTR uses more clutch discs albeit smaller, thinner discs.

      What else is being done and how much time will it take?

      The DCT is going to receive a cooling system based on what SSP has done with the GTR's. This will be a DCT specific application and will be great for the guys who track. No more overheats, no more staying away from the track on hot days. Look for a separate build thread specifically for the cooling system in the next few weeks. Regarding the time period, expect completion next month with the car returning fully assembled and capable of handling the increased power.

        sounds like you are gona put some cars to shame! Hopefully all the power and quick shifting of DCT will make for some very quick times.

        Sticky, how do you plan to get all the power to the ground? If you run slicks you risk breaking the differential and driveshafts right? at least launching from standstill for 1/4 mile which I know you plan to do. For driving on street have you considered getting some widebody panels to accommodate some wider wheels and tires? or will 305 make due w/ sticky tires?

        Actually, what they tell me at SSP is the rear end is really beefy on our M3's. They are going to build a driveshaft loop looks like in addition.

        I can fit 305's now. I would like to run a drag radial on the street, like the Nitto 345 19 inch but I don't know how to fit it. I considered a widebody kit but Vorsteiner never got back to me and that is probably a good thing as 25k for a widebody kit is just stupid. I'm not sure what I'm going to do but I would definitely like to put some serious rubber back there.

        On the strip, slicks, shouldn't be a problem but you can't use those on the street.

        Very nice...didnt realize the e9x has such a strong rear end.

        Im sure you could just do the rear fenders...maybe a custom shop? like what josh with the C63 did. Not sure maybe the gt haus rear fenders? can they be used without changing anything else so it does get costly?

        Ya I talked to him about that... not cheap. The shop that did it does great work but we are talking around $7k just for the rear.

        $#@!! thats crazy. Can you just have them pulled out a bit? or $#@! it...who the hell needs fenders!

        oh and if you get the vorsteiner kit...you'll prob trap 5mph slower(joke, but i bet it would slow you down somewhat)...i bet that thing has more drag than a hummer...thing looks like a brick up front. I really wonder what the drag coefficient on it is?

        I don't think they released any of that kind of info. I don't really think there is much function to it, solely looks.

        What I don't understand is why we can't tub the rear. Can't we modify the rear control arms or something like that?

        Honestly, those fenders are obnoxious and you probably need the whole kit.

        this is awesome! Maybe the application will trickle down to the DCTs used in other bmws (like n54!)...

        How do you hold off from the car for this long? 6 months is like a lifetime!
