New Quickest and Fastest BMW 1/4 mile record? South African S38 Powered E30 - 9.02 @ 157.45 mph

fast car, nice find, whats with the wavy sounding power at the back half? curious as to if it's just the nature of it, like basic physics.

That bouncy sound is exactly that. The track become bumpy towards the end and the car bounces hence the noise like that.

Excellent video! What a strong engine, I'm guessing they started with the 3.5 liter version? (B 35)

Quite correct, I created the front page article.

I went by our own 1/4 mile list and I apologize if that was inaccurate. This is a dedicated drag car, correct? That does bear mentioning.

What 7 second BMW's are there? Seems we are going to have to make a distinction here but the time was quicker and faster than the fastest E30 we have on our list.

I think there are a few Swedish monsters in E30, E36 and E34 shape that are in the eights if I am not mistaken and there are two 7's second E36's in Australia which are not BMW powered.
This car is a run of the mill E30 Chasis with a big motor and solid diff conversion. Its still a manual which makes a big difference at that time bracket.

i think if you're going to start including drag cars to the 1/4th times there has to be a separate list for drag cars. what qualifies a street car is that you can drive it to the track, then drive it home after you're done.

Yes it is, hence why I will not add it to the list.

I think we have a clear distinction now. The top entry though is becoming what could be considered a drag car though.

I think the orange car is a tube chasis car with just the E36 Skin. I stand corrected though. I cannot believe of fast it is on what doesn't look like a great track

Sounds like the car was breaking up in the last gear.

Quick update. New times achieved on the 24th of September, 2010. What I have failed to mention is these times are being run at 5500ft altitude.

8.8 @ 156.79mph still manual running a Toyota box hehe.

Its a 5 speed Toyota Box of some sort.

isnt that the same story with any car that runs low 8s? Its not the same car, hence why i dont give a $#@! about the make of cars that run 8's, i just respect the 8s...

Those supras running 7s and $#@!, use powerglides and so does every other drag car. RARELY do you see a 7 second car on manual trans, and much respect to them. But those cars once start dipping into the 8s are no longer "enter make here".

Think about it, ford makes the best rear ends, GM makes the best automatics and every other car company makes the best engine (choose your preference) so what you end up with is a 7 second car thats a concoction of the best parts of every car company on this planet (the purists stay away from this type of activity due to their own accord).
