People already throwin out "E30 M3" comparisons to this car that isn't even confirmed yet, just because its a 4-banger? I want to get excited too but haven't we been let down in one way or another with every subsequent M car SINCE the E30 M3 (maybe except e39 M5)? With each generation of M since the first M3, driver involvement has gone down. Hoping an M2 would reverse that trend a bit.

Nobody is comparing it to the E30 M3. I strongly doubt it will improve on the drivers experience of that car. No M has since and the closest thing to offer as much driving excitement is the E46 M3 CSL. One may be better than the other depending on how much you like technology.

Regardless, the reason it is brought up is because the E30 M3 was sold with a four cylinder motor while a six cylinder was available. However, there also likely were racing regulations in mind as well. This car won't be racing anything. That said, with a similar motor to the M3 it may be too close but BMW would have a much larger motor than Mercedes or Audi in the segment.

We'll see what happens. I'm all for a new M turbo four-cylinder. Re-using the N55 is boring and it isn't an M motor.

Get a 235i with the N55 then. I know I would rather have the M2 before even seeing it or its specs. I'd rather have the Audi S4 with the smaller 3.0 TFSI than with the 4.2 liter V8 it used to have as well.

Its not the same thing. Your talking about .2 liter difference for an efficient 4v s14 vs non efficient 2v m20. More than likely the build and flow efficiency of an m2 engine will not be much different from a n55 but the size difference will be substantial. Speaking of just an engine i would take the six. After market brakes and suspension would be far less than the price of a m. Only thing left is the body but ehh...

The size difference is mitigated by forced induction, direct injection, and higher compression. The cubes were more important back then.

It's pretty much the same thing. M 4-Cylinder powerplant versus the standard six-cylinder already available. If it's a dedicated M motor I don't see why it wouldn't have a better build and greater efficiency.

I say let's wait and see the motor.

While the S14 developement came from the M88 motor (an M engine) this time again(like all new M models) bmw will just raise the boost on their N20(and strengthen the heat management). But dont expect modifications as you can find them in a e46 M3 motor(based too on a "normal" engine, but heavy modified), they will be very basic. Not worth calling it an M-powerplant.(dont expect either a new developed engin like the "old" m3 V8).
Obviously i hope to be wrong and maybe they will put some effort in this project, so the M2 could be very interesting also from an engine point of view.(as a car it will be for sure, no matter what motor they put in it, it will perform good as a car).
But lets be realistic, the only interesting engine in the whole M lineup will be the new M3 engine. Thats the only model left, that gets a "real build M engine" in every generation.(or at least until now, as in depth technical specs of the new engine are not known(will it have the third e-turbo for lagless engine response?)).
Bring the new M3 engine in the M2, that would be cool.(like when they brought the m3 engine in the z3m, and the next gen in the z4m, but is bmw still cool? They have to prove as im not sure any more)

I'm afraid you may be right but let's wait and see. the S63tu has some significant upgrades from the N63.

Size is not mitigated when both engines have fi, direct injection, and so on. Just as the m20 had non of these, neither did the s14. What the s14 did have for mitigation was much better efficiency. I doubt a 2L m engine will be that much more efficient than a n55 to mitigate anything.

Why? It could have better heads, more aggressive tuning, higher compression, etc. Kind of like the S63tu as already mentioned.

If staying German, I will definitely own an AMG for my next vehicle. Although Audi is getting up there too, but just not enogh excititement yet. American performance cars are also no joke nowadats. Most recent example. The reveal of the M6GC in detroit. Already down half second 0-60 and CLS63 is $15k less.
