Nobody expected BMW to win the DTM Manufacturer Championship in their very first season since returning to DTM racing after a lengthy absence. BMW had the odds stacked against them racing with only 6 cars versus the 8 that Audi and Mercedes had on the field. BMW trailed all season, never leading in the manufacturer championship standings.

Audi seemed poised to take home the championship after a dominating performance in the second to last race of the season which vaulted them into first place by a decent margin. BMW was in third place entering the final race but scoring 60 points compared to the 8 for Audi and 33 for Mercedes put them 11 points ahead of Audi and 17 ahead of Mercedes when the dust settled.

Simply a phenomenal come from behind victory that nobody saw coming with a complete Audi collapse when it mattered most. Congratulations to BMW and also to 2012 DTM Champion Bruno Spengler who BMW was able to snatch from Mercedes. A move that clearly paid off and resulted in a championship.

Final Results for the 2012 DTM season:

There are three annual classifications in the DTM. The title “DTM Champion” is awarded to the driver who has achieved the highest points score. The title “DTM Team Champion” is awarded to the team whose two drivers, in the aggregate, have scored the highest number of points. For the title “DTM Manufacturer Champion”, the six top drivers of a brand who finished a race in the top ten are counted.
