      This is a rumor put out by Autocar who has been wrong before. They are reporting the MKVII GTI may get a limited edition lightweight variant which will cut considerable weight thanks to carbon fiber pieces. The reason for this model would be to honor the 40th birthday of the Golf and that would be a damn good way to celebrate. The bulkhead, floor panels, and surrounding panels would be made out of aluminum.

      For the roof and hood carbon fiber would be used. The aluminum and carbon pieces all put together would shed about 441 pounds and possibly get the curb weight in the 2500 pound range which is hard to believe.

      The costs supposedly are justified with Audi using similar materials as well as aluminum pieces that already are being produced for the new Golf. The car also will be front wheel drive but with a trick new diff taken from some of the all wheel drive models providing better traction.

      Just what will this super 40th Anniversary Carbon GTI cost? No ball park price is stated and whatever that price may be, they should build this car. It would be quite the anniversary gift to the VW faithful.

        I see two things here...

        1. this will never make it to the us
        2. if it does, it will be far to expensive

        Let's hope it does. It will likely be pretty damn expensive but what a damn cool way to honor the Golf.

        way too expensive, i can only imagine. the R is already expensive as is..
