Mercedes passes off all V12 engine development to AMG

AMG will be solely responsible for Mercedes V12 development for all future models. This does not mean the V12 will disappear from the Mercedes portfolio just that AMG will be hand building the low volume motors. AMG already builds the M275, M279, and Pagani V12's for example. 600 models will not be gone from the lineup but instead will feature AMG motors without the AMG badge.
The next generation S600 will feature an AMG built M279 V12 (
same as in the new R231 SL65 AMG) that likely will just be slightly detuned through software. Makes us wonder though if the S65 AMG (which we assume we will see) will be significantly different or just feature different software. We will know soon enough.
