      The BMW S38 is one of (if not arguably the best) the most impressive inline-6 cylinder motors ever produced by BMW. We will leave that debate for another article however and instead give you the details on the PPM-Racing 4.2 liter stroker kit. It includes forged pistons, H-Beam connecting rods, and a billet 4340 crankshaft. It is applicable to either 3.6 or 3.8 liter S38 motors from the BMW E28 M5 and BMW E34 BMW M5 respectively.

      The kit can be customized and accommodate naturally aspirated or boosted builds with compression ratio choices for the pistons including 8.0:1, 8.5:1, 10.0:1, 11.5:1, or 12.0:1. Piston sizes are either 94.5 or 95.0 mm. The kit is designed to use a 1x compression ring. Awesome? Yes, awesome.

      Included:

      - 6x forged pistons
      - Rings, pins, locks
      - 6x H-Beam connecting rods
      - ARP2000 rod bolts
      - 98mm Billet 4340 crankshaft

        Its actually the hub that walks on the crank, finally it damages the "woodruf key" that locks the hub in position, my experience are on turbocharged high tourqe engines, but i guess BMW re-designed when making the B38 of a reason? I hope PPM´s stuff works good bcs its a nice upgrade to a super nice engine.

        Well if the block can stick togheter and dont crack as they usualy do im sure we can see 16-1800hp, we are not building anymore M30/S38´s...tired of that game now Click here to enlarge

        What motor do you mostly work on?

        I would say most experience lies in S5X´s, well if they pay good enough yes but the knowledge and experience around here (Sweden) are wide so many customers do the entire builds them self, and not that interested to build one for the company since its like 17years ago the last M5E34 left the wheels Click here to enlarge

        HMMM that would be interesting i am sure PPM would be happy to cooperate with JAWS on this S85 Project. I know for fact 720BHP was already achieved from a N/A S85 5.8L stroker! Maybe Swedish Magic can go 800+Click here to enlarge

        Dinan did for some sort of racing team. There was no graph or something but the engine was sitting on a engine dyno and numbers are quoted from that.

        You are right, and the long cams pose a problem at high RPM but from what I know about the S38 it is regularly revved to 7500 with mild tunes stock without issue and has seen 8k. This is all stock internals. So is 8500 on aftermarkets all that big of an issue considering BMW made the S14 crank capable of 10000 rpm and kept it at 7000?
        I think 8500 would be, in the best case scenario, pushing your luck. It could hold up drag/highway racing, but I think on a road course you'd have issues. The Procar m88 engines revved to 9000rpm but
        they were rebuilt after every race. If I built one of these engines, I'd probably keep it under 7.5k for peace of mind. Possibly blowing a ~$10,000 engine for a few extra rpms doesn't seem worth the risk to me. Then again, maybe the available aftermarket balancer works wonders and would soak up 8500 rpm easily.

        I do not know for sure, but I think the s14's stock valvetrain is what limits its rpm potential, which is why BMW kept the red line at 7000. Upgrade the valvetrain you're good to go; the s14's crank is much shorter being a 4 cyl so it doesn't experience the same issues with vibration.

        Ok i respect you. 8500 rpm is not 10k rpm though but the point is bmw was conservative.

        Correct Bmw had the s14 revs going well over 10k rpms in the e30 m3 racing hay day. I would love to own a e30 m3 turbo with a gtx3076 reving to say 8500rpms. See if it can give those evo's a run for the money. Maybe even a hta3586 with e85. Hrrmmi or or or the OP goes turbo, and keeps it a 3.6 with a gt4088-gt4094 with proper internals reving to 7800rpms. A raping powerband, and a sound that God himself would love. 4inch exhaust with a 4 inch cutout. Instant tq

        My friends Joakim from Jakan Racing, i belive 8.21sec was the best time he did and 270km/h, 1100kgs on the line race ready.
        He revved close to 9k with his 2,3L S14 , 900-1000Hp´..pretty nice
