CAR Magazine report claims Maybach lost almost half a million dollars ($500k) on each car sold

We find this report from
CAR a bit tough to believe. The Maybach sedans were based on the old W220 S-Class platform. It is not as if Daimler created a new design from the ground up. It was basically an expensive S-Class even sharing the drivetrain with the same old M275 twin turbo V12 and transmission already found in other 600 Mercedes models. Where Maybach likely lost money was not due to engineering costs, as it was a parts bin sedan, but on the marketing and dealer network support.
Maybach was clearly poorly managed and a re-skinned S-class should not have cost what they were asking for it to begin with. Daimler seemed far more focused on its Chrysler issues than trying to turn the Maybach brand around. They sunk over a billion Euros into the brand as a whole with no profit to be had. No wonder the brand was axed although it would have been interesting to see what Maybach could have done with a proper platform built specifically for the brand.
