• Autocar compares the new F10 M5 to the 2012 Nissan GT-R - Flawed comparison?

      Someone needs to get British people to stop reviewing / comparing cars. The main similarities between the M5 and the GT-R are that they have twin turbocharged motors mated to dual clutch transmissions. The M5 is a luxury sport sedan that is heavier and rear wheel drive. Comparing the two in a sprint from a stop where the M5 can not apply its power on street tires makes no sense. A roll on comparison would have been far more telling of the horsepower difference rather than allowing an all wheel drive car to showcase why all wheel drive is useful from a stop.

      The only merit to this comparison is that seemingly for once a video is not being made right after a torrential downpour. The GT-R is a different type of vehicle that was aimed at the 911 turbo. If you feel this comparison makes sense, then comparing the M5 to a 911 turbo makes sense as well.

      The British simply do poor comparisons and this is beyond sub-par. If BMW will send us an M5 and Nissan will send us a GT-R we'll show these people at Autocar how enthusiasts really compare these cars by doing a 1/4 mile comparison from a stop giving the M5 proper rubber and putting it on a strip using launch control on both vehicles. Additionally, how about some dyno numbers? How about some roll on comparisons? If you are going to make this comparison, at least do it in a manner that will not hamper the M5.

      Autocar chooses the GT-R. You know what we choose? To stop taking British automotive reviews seriously.

        Cool video but it ends there... these cars were never a competition and truth be told the only place I could see the M5 winning is in luxury and comfort, I would be shocked even if the M5 won the roll race (it's still a heavier car with a DCT not quite up to par with the Gtr). The M5 is a perfect blend of luxury and performance; the GT-R is a track bred car... 'ring times will tell the difference between these two cars. I am actually shocked that Autocar would do something so stupid; they generally do a good job... find a CLS63 AMG to compare the M5 to and we'll talk...

        I thought it was a dumb comparo, not because its 2 vs 4 door or awd vs rwd, but because the M5 lost in a series of tests that it was never meant to be the best at. M5's always been dubbed "autobahn cruisers". There not meant to be launched from 0 or to break track records.
        How about next time they compare refinement, ride quality, noise levels, overall feel, comfort, chick meter, etc. Add these into the comparo and i dont think the GTR's performance specs are enough to win. This comparo was deliberately meant for the GTR to come out on top. They still trying to de-throne the king!

        Exactly, the M5 was never a car designed to excel at every performance statistic. People just look at the GT-R's numbers. The M5 is a great all around car just like the M3. It does everything well, it isn't a robot with no soul from Japan aimed at a specific set of performance numbers.

        I doubt BMW ever took the M5 on the ring with a GT-R in front of it letting the world know who it was aiming at. The fact the M5 can be compared to the GT-R or someone even thought it was a good idea speaks more highly of the M5.

        This English guy is a first class idiot. Wow.. A 4 door luxury sport sedan being within inches of a pure sports car is already a hands down win. I hope i never meet this guy..
