      The Porsche 918 Spyder is still on track. As most of you know, this is going to be a hybrid supercar. The gasoline motor recently received an upgraded from the originally proposed 3.4 liter in the concept to a 4.6 liter V8 with 543 horsepower based on the motor in the RS Spyder LMP2 race car. This motor combined with two electric motors will make for a total output of 720 horsepower which will move the projected 3700 pound car nicely. Definitely a hybrid no car enthusiast is going to laugh at.

        Looks awesome, but it seems a little too heavy for a P-car.

        spyders and convertables are usually heavier due to the structural reinforcement needed in the chassis. I'm pretty sure it will still be stupid fast with 720hp LOL - and also cost half a mil.

        Don't really care unless it gets good MPG numbers. That's the whole point of weighing it down and adding cost with all the "hybrid" stuff, right?

        Exactly.

        I think they should also have a non-hybrid version with a NA V12 making 700hp. The car is just too sexy.

        The weight is not from being a convertible, as the chassis is designed from the ground to not rely on the roof for strength, just like many modern sports cars. The weight is from having a completely redundant electrical drivetrain in addition to a full gasoline drivetrain. Just the weight of the motors and mounting for the front wheels alone is probably 200 pounds, and the heaviest part of any electrical vehicle system is always the batteries.

        True the added electronics, electric motor and batteries add weight but without a roof, you have to add torsional rigidity to the frame and that adds weight too.

        True that, but if you do it in the right way, the added weight would be minimal. Zonda F Roadster has the same weight as Zonda F Coupe.

        As it should. Where do you think the extra weight by taking the roof off goes ? Into the frame to add structural rigidity. Otherwise, if they got rid of the roof on the Roadster it would only stand to reason that it would be lighter - but it isn't. They put the weight of the roof somewhere...

        What you said is correct, but we are not talking about a heavy roof in Zonda. I read somewhere that If they would follow the known route by reinforcing the structure, the weight difference between Coupe and Roadster would be above 40 KG's but with their innovation on this subject, the weight difference is nothing.
