It will really be a battle of who spends the most in the aftermarket.

This is a great step though... and for such a heavy car, wow.

thats true...looks like MB hit the nail on the head with this powerplant....gezz....and it doesnt even have an intake or exhaust or down pipes or intercooler yet....that thing is going to be nuts....wonder how long that tranny will hold up.....and i bet it will cost an arm and a leg to upgrade

Wow, super impressive, that didn't take long did it? It took the M156 over 3 years to break into the 10's, just image where the M157's will be after 3 years of development

The M157 AMG MCT 7G-tronic clutch plates are rated up to 1000Nm it's aprox. 737.5ftlb... aprox ~640's ftlb at the wheels (the M159 DCT it's rated at 750Nm based on max gross car mass 2500Kg). But, usually the manuf. could underate them a bit, but not much. Also, note that max gross vehicule mass, RS (racestart) & higher shiftpoint limit can also limit the life of the transmission. RENNtech has kept the M157 torque levels & shiftpoint below this manuf. limit, so they don't compromise reliability.

so another 60-100ft/lbs of torque from now and renntech should start looking at tranny upgrades?

Tranny upgrade will be for sure. But, possible 9's on a lighter powered M157, like the new 2013 AMG SL63 biturbo.

On the bright side it is an automatic so DCT nonsense to deal with. As always, electronics should be the main obstacle as the physical properties of that transmission can be upgraded.

New SL is looking pretty good right about now.

Not gonna lie; for such a heavy beast with just a tune, those numbers are ridiculous. Right now, I am loving this car and looking forward to what a tuned M5 can produce. To think, a 335i hasn't done this in 5 years whereas a brand new heavy ass Benz does it in a few months. Amazing!

To be fair, the 335 is not an AMG equivalent model and has almost half the displacement with 2 less cylinders and smaller turbos.

Also, it is really the fueling due to direct injection that has held the 335 back.

Looks like RENNtech is putting the heat on the M5.... Once RENNtech gets its hands on an E63 TT, this 10.9 will likely be around 10.7

Has there been any 1/4 mile records for the new M5 yet? I haven't followed the latest development details.

It depends on if owners are willing to abuse the DCT or not. It should be capable of 10's fairly easily with launch control and drag radials.

It will be here in the Summer.

I'm very impressed with RENNtech's improvements for the M157, but also their tune for the M278 biturbo. Not the same animal, but it would be interesting to see the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times for a 2012 E550 coupe after the RENNtech tune.

It's hard not to be impressed with the way they are pushing both of these twin turbo V8's.

Would like to see M278 1/4 mile numbers, definitely.
