Laptimes around German Contidrom circuit by AutoBild for 1M, Cayman R, E92 M3, and E92 M3 DCT

Interesting numbers. Has the 1M set an official ring time? I want to see how that compares with the M3 6MT. Also, is the Cayman stick? Or do those come in PDK?

The Cayman does come in PDK and it would seem that was the transmission tested.

I think they should all be MT, since it involves more driver skill IMO. Nice comparisons anyhow.

Edit: Kinda wish the 1M came in DCT also, it makes no sense that you can get a 135 in DCT but not the 1M.

Nope, does not make any sense. I think BMW mismanaged the 1M completely, but that is my opinion.

Manual vs DCT arguments for personal cars aside, I'd rather have a magazine test conducted with DCT (or even autos) to minimize room for driver error so we get numbers for the different cars that can be compared in a useful way.

From what I've seen, magazines tend to find the $#@!tiest drivers they can and throw them the keys. Look at that recent 1M vs TTRS vs Infinity IPL video for a beautiful example.

This shows the M3 6spd being slower than the 1m and your above statement says otherwise. This would mean if the 1M were DCT is would beat the M3 DCT on a paper race

Good catch Sammy, sorry for the typo, it is in order of fastest to slowest.

It would be interesting to see how much a DCT would help the 1M.

Perhaps it will become available at a later date.

DCT makes a HUGE difference. It's big, almost a tenth per shift really vs. a traditional manual.

My speculation for why the 1M did not get a DCT is because it would be too close to a 6 speed M3.

Look at the difference between a DCT and 6speed M3. Apply that to a 1M, what happens to the M3 advantage?

Doesn't that say something for the 1M?

All I know is I'm getting into one of these 1Ms knowing the motor is going to be built up over it's lifetime. The chassis, suspension and tires are almost perfect for what I want as a DD (.97g skidpad on 245F and 265R!!! run-flats?), and I already have some experience with the N54 and how it's DME reacts to mods.

I'm excited!


Now if only someone would hurry up and buy my beloved 135i...... which has also treated me very well! (go find some C5 Z06s and various other muscle cars with some MS109 in the tank )

Even if its slower on the other track, take into consideration it's slower in a straight so it's actually making up for that in the turns, that's where it's beating the M3

This is a pretty tight track so I'm surprised the DCT M3 and the 1M are as far apart as they are. The DCT M3 is faster, but it isn't some huge difference.

1M cant come in DCT, if it did it would outperform the standard M3 and that was a simple business decision to make. No DCT on the 1M to keep it under the M3.
