    Last month we saw an 8L90 automatic C7 Z06 go 10's in the 1/4 mile completely stock. Well, here is yet another one reinforcing the point. The Z06 with the 8L90 8-speed automatic transmission is a high 10 second car. The thing is, the previous generation Z06 also broke into the 10's at MIR with far less power. It truly makes one wonder a bit why the C7 Z06 is not much faster in a straight line considering its massive power and torque from the supercharged LT4 motor. Especially when this run is put into the context of having run at one of the fastest strips in the United States and in -800 density altitude. Still, 10.770 @ 129.080 on street tires is not bad at all and the automatic is a few tenths quicker and a couple miles per hour faster than the manual from the data we have seen. Oddly though, the previous generation C6 ZR1 despite having less power and torque (although it is lighter) still is the faster Corvette.

    Here are some 1/4 mile times from some big horsepower GTR setups from Switzer. The Goliath X made some headlines recently beating an Underground Racing 2R Gallardo on the highway and posting 1865 horsepower to all four wheels on a Dynojet (with wheelspin). The E1K-X GTR makes less power at 1400 wheel horsepower but it's no slouch. It's just power numbers have become so absurd in the GTR world that we're almost numb to how ridiculous 1400 at all four wheels truly is. So Switzer had both cars run on the dragstrip and they are definitely fast. The Goliath X in the right lane went 8.575 @ 177.74 on mid/high boost and the E1K-X in the left lane went 9.137 @ 163.29 on medium boost. Both clearly have more in them. To put this in context the top dog is ETS with their 7.492 @ 189.20 pass. Can the Goliath X match that on high boost? It's a tall order but it clearly is a hell of a package.

    That is the rumor going around. We have no official source on this but apparently there was some Audi employee meeting in the USA and the RS3 was confirmed for the USA at that meeting. It is really no surprise as we always expected to get the sedan. The hatchback we knew was out of the question based on precedent. Audi already sells an RS3 Sportback in Europe based on the 8V platform. So, expect that same drivetrain to make its way into the 8V A3 sedan. That means a 367 horsepower and 343 lb-ft of torque 2.5 liter turbocharged and direct injected inline-5 sending its power to all four wheels courtesy of a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. Now the 2.5 TFSI motor can put out a heck of a lot more power than that. Remember the 525 horsepower A3 Clubsport concept car from last year? That is what the RS3 should be but it would eat everything else in the Audi lineup alive. That's ok, that is what tuning is for. The most obvious competition for this car would be from the Mercedes CLA45 AMG. The RS3 should be able to out-muscle it though. Whatever happened to Audi's high output EA888 that was supposed to in the RS3 anyway? Hopefully we can get more concrete details and not just some rumor someone supposedly overheard somewhere. The chances of an RS3 in the US are the best they have ever been though. The sedan seems like a certainty.

    Ferrari obviously made big waves when they turbocharged their V8's. This led to speculation if Ferrari's high revving naturally aspirated F140 V12 engine that sees duty in the FF, 599, F12 Berlinetta, Enzo, and LaFerrari would also get a pair of turbochargers. It appears it will not as Ferrari will focus on hybrid power instead to supplant the torque turbos offer. Electric motors obviously deliver their torque instantly and the linear fashion in which they do so likely suits the power delivery and response Ferrari is going for. A Ferrari source stated, “There will be no turbos on our V12s. Expect instead to see 48-volt systems on the next generation.” Who is that source? Autocar does not specify who it is only that it is supposedly someone 'close' to the factory. That could mean anything and anyone. It could also make this all meaningless as there is no way to verify it. It is likely true but who knows at this stage. We will definitely be seeing more hybrid Ferrari vehicles in the future. Source

    These are two performance sport utility vehicles that do have similarities. They are German, turbocharged, all wheel drive, and both feature dual clutch transmissions. Beyond that though we are talking very different vehicles as the GLA45 AMG is essentially based on a front wheel drive sedan platform. That of course being the CLA-Class. The GLA45 AMG can be thought of as a CLA45 AMG on stilts. The test numbers show the GLA45 AMG matches its sibling pretty much across the board. That includes in curb weight as the GLA45 weighs only 3589 pounds. The GLA45 AMG also features the M133 2.0 liter four-cylinder AMG engine. With 355 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque it is no slouch and capable of high 12's in the 1/4 mile in stock form. The Macan Turbo though has a 3.6 liter twin turbo V6. The engine is less stressed and puts out more horsepower and torque in stock form. 400 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. It's bigger, heavier (roughly 4500 pounds), more powerful, and more expensive. Would the 340 horsepower 3.0 liter twin turbo V6 Macan S that starts at $49,900 make more sense for this comparison? If you are trying to level the playing field a bit, yes. But even so the Macan S and Turbo are larger vehicles. The GLK is closer to size of the Macan. Regardless, this comparison pits these two together and is what it is. The straightline testing has the Macan Turbo come up with the quicker 0-60 at 4.2 seconds to the GLA45 AMG 4.3. The 1/4 mile result though favors the GLA45 AMG as the Macan Turbo manages 12.9 @ 106.2 whereas the GLA45 AMG does the 1/4 mile sprint in 12.8 @ 107.9. There is something to be said for power to weight but it is highly impressive the GLA45 AMG is quicker and faster in a straight line. Especially when one considers it has two less cylinders and has a 1.6 liter displacement penalty. To test the handling prowess they closed off a section of a canyon road. It is not super scientific but the GLA45 AMG comes out just ahead by less than a tenth of a second. The GLA45 AMG is lighter, more tossable, and offers a bit more steering feedback but the Macan Turbo does very well. It's practically a wash. MotorTrend picks the GLA45 AMG. If you want the vehicle that is more fun to drive that is the choice. If you want more utility the Macan Turbo is the choice. Considering the GLA45 AMG bang for the buck it is hard to argue against it here.

    Very nice results here from Fabspeed for their new valved Supersport Lamborghini Huracan exhaust system. As stated the exhaust system is valved and supports different sound modes based on the steering wheel mounted mode selector. For example, Strada mode keeps the valves closed on the 70mm bypass pipes. Select Corsa mode and it opens up the exhaust to let the world hear those Italian horses prance. The power and torque gains are very respectable as well. It is nice to finally have some Huracan graphs on a Dynojet. The baseline is 555 horsepower and 403 lb-ft of torque at all four wheels. With the exhaust output rises to 584 and 420 respectively. Gains are throughout the entire curve. With an ECU tune it certainly looks like the Huracan is capable of 600 horsepower at all four wheels in naturally aspirated form. In other words, wow. That would be in the 130+ horsepower per liter range all motor. The cherry on the top is that the Fabspeed system saves 23 pounds off the OEM system. Nicely done Fabspeed.

    The new GT3RS differs quite a bit from its standard 991 GT3 sibling. Not that the standard GT3 is soft but the GT3RS looks like it just came off the racetrack. Its wider track, air intakes, wing, roll cage, etc., all contribute to a GT3 class race car look for the street. The car of course has more power than the standard 991 GT3 by virtue of its larger 4.0 liter flat-6 motor and also is a bit lighter. The leaked spec sheet basically tells all the details. We have official pictures from Porsche but enjoy these independent photos of the GT3 RS at the airport in Stuttgart:
